When I remove the tops of my Mikuni BS36 carbs and take out the springs, I look down inside the slide and I find that the slides at the outside of the bank, being carbs 1 and 4, have smaller holes than carbs 2 and 3. Should they all be the same and if so should it be the larger holes all the same or the smaller ones all the same. When I lift the slides manualy and let them go, 1 and 4 drop down slower than 2 and 3 which drop with a clunk.

Lets imagine that all the cylinders are autonomous.... then... you will see that the carbs are also that way.
They must conform... all must be 'clunk' at the same rate. Time for a bit of a clean up me thinks.

I know some four carb bikes put different jets in the center two carbs because of less air on the cylinder, could be that IDK?

slides need to be cleaned with gun solvent and so do the throats of the carbs where the slides go sometimes the carb body needs to be honed a little to clean up the passage
different jets to make inner cylinders run cooler
