Realized that my XJ wouldn't run unless on the choke, so decided to break down the carbs and see if something was blocked. As I was taking out the Jets I was wondering what the stock sizes are. This is what I've got. So far everything looks super clean and I haven't seen anything that looks like a problem. The gaskets are even in good condition. Going to soak most of the parts in carp cleaner just in case, and put them back together tomorrow.

You really need to break the rack do a full trear down soak in carb cleaner and put new shaft seals in . Spray carb cleaner will not get into the small passages PERIOD. You will be wasting your time if you dont go to church of clean. Xj4ever had all the seals... also replace the fuel rail O rings .

your carbs will smell fishy if you use carp cleaner I use a filet knife to clean carp

    Carb Cleaner works best

throttle shaft seals are on the ends of the shafts that the butterflies are mounted to each side of the individual carbs

If you have broken the rack......now is the time to definitely replace the throttle shaft seals ( 2 seals per carb.....so 8 seals ) and replace the 6 fuel o-rings sas you mentioned

To get the shaft seals out you need to remove the butterflies and disassemble all the linkages. Keep things in order, but if you get lost, we'll help you. Well we will probably poke fun, too, but don't worry -- we won't leave you stranded with a disassembled rack.

This problem if you put carbs in carb cleaner witout taking shaft seals out you will ruin seals. To remove seals break the rack , remove 2 screws on the butterfly plate mak position and pull plate out. Remove E clip on one side and 10mm nut on the other pull shaft out then you will see the seals...xj4ever has the seals....30 yrs these seals can dry out and cause vacuum leaks. This is all covered in the church of clean. Done right you will have sweet running bike ..cut corners and you will be frustrated..

Ok thanks everyone. I laughed when I saw carP cleaner as well. Pretty funny.

I didn't soak the body's as I don't have that much cleaner. Just the jets, tubes, etc. I know not to soak the float and the needle, rubber tip, as it'll eat them. Will try to get the butterflies out later today. Also how do I remove the o rings from the fuel tubes? They seem hard and act like they won't come off.

So other than that, things looked good. I'm not saying they are good nor perfect but in good shape.

    1. It's not gonna hurt the floats to soak them.

    2. It doesn't matter if the rubber tip is there or not.....you're gonna replace the needles anyway, right?.......RIGHT?!?!?! You don't even need to throw the needles in the dip. I throw mine in the scrap-brass container. You're gonna get metal-tipped ones anyway, right?.....RIGHT?!?!?!?

3.take a precision flathead screwdriver and 'cut' into the o-ring with it, pull it up, let it break and pull it off. Or, grab the o-ring with a needle-nose piers and yank it off. It doesn't matter if it breaks. Or, just throw it into the soak...it'll swelland stretch and get really mushy and you can pull it right off. You're not saving them anyway, right?.....RIGHT?!?!?!?

Well I honestly was gonna use the rubber tip ones but I SUHpose that if I'm buying things I might as well get metal ones. Lol. Also with the floats, is that because they're plastic not rubber?

Also I was hoping to save the o rings because they're pretty and I need me some hand jewelry. Not really tho.

@hogfiddles So I've found I have a stripped mixture screw that just won't come out. It will move like 1/4 a turn but nothing more. Is it better to have a shop get it out or switch the body with the other carb body I have?

I have a second set of carbs. But they aren't complete. Just the bodies and internals. No bowls or caps. PO gave me them.

Unless you have experience with removing stuck fasteners I highly reccomend taking it to a machine shop.
Drilling out a stuck screw can be tricky, but becomes dang difficult when the screw is small. I've done the job, but then I've had decades of screw-ups (practice) to get the method down.

You can swap a spare body in, just make sure that it's from the same position and is in fact the same model of carb body.

The set in the front came off the bik and are quite dirty. Still need to finish cleaning them but the others are the extra set. Pretty clean but haven't done anything to them except break them apart.
