hey everyone i am looking for some helpful tips maybe? im working on the 85 xj700 it has 14,000 miles on it, i have cleaned it carbs minus braking the rack i just don't have the cash right now, cleaned real well and made sure to clean all of the jets in the bottom of carb bowls, i checked the valves and some were off but i have got it all in spec, i did a comp check and all cylinders were between 148-156 psi i also wet set the floats to 1mm, the carbs on my bike have six hoses coming off of them not counting the fuel line one shorter one on each carb and a longer one that is in between 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 , i was reading some older post and was mentioned that they where capped off? none of mine are capped off and im not to familiar with the 1985 xj700, it will idle but when i give it throttle the motor boggs and backfires, does anybody have any ideas? thanks for reading

Could you get a picture of these hoses? They sound like just the bowl overflow/vents which should be open, but if you are talking about the little nubs on the top of the rubber boots between the carbs and the engine yes those are vacuum ports and they need to be capped off

    Those hoses are not capped
    2 between are overflow
4 off tops are vent tubes
If any are kinked bike will run poorly
And double check the small port in float bowl. They are often overlooked.

Your float height is off if it is 1mm should be 3mm is one issue. The other is your synch is off as well. Hate to tell you this BUT spray cleaner will not get into all passages of the carbs . Breaking the rack and pulling all the seals out and soaking for 1 to 2 hrs in carb cleaner is only way to clean carbs. Do you have a manual for your model? it should list what the hose routing is.

The jet in bowl is clear on all four, I don't have a manual for this bike, I have one for 1980-1984 650 and 750, online it says the 85-86 xj700 is 1mm +/- 1. this is where I got my carb info it list all xj bikes http://xjbikes.wikidot.com/carb-specs

My service manual for my 85 XJ700n says that the wet set is 1mm +/- 1 mm. I have mine set at 2mm.

And those hose should point down between airbox boots except left one should have a little clip that holds it

It is, except on the very early XJ650?.....but even the automatic can chain adjuster can stick.....not an XJ fail, as far as i know, but it can happen....
Otherwise, sounds almost like a bearing whine??....Alternator??

Camchain is supposed to be tight, as long as it's the correct chain.....It could be vacuum/airleaks as suggested, even exhaust to cylinder leaks...check them all

So I reset the cam chain tension, I started it and it was still making the noise then it sounded like it was coming from alternator so I pulled it apart and started it with it off and the noise stopped so i cleaned it out put it back together but then it started again? I also pulled all four spark plugs and cycled the motor over and the noise in not there but with the plugs in the noise starts instantly witch points to a air/vacuum leak? The exhaust is tight IDK might be rebuilding the carb anyway but I don't want to just waste money, I don't have much

Does that mean you removed the stator and the rotor and started it?

What does cycled the motor mean? Turning with starter or turning by hand?

Cycling the motor meet turning it with the start button, and I took out the outer copper wound piece in the alternator and started.

It ended up being a vacuum/gasket leak, the second intake boot was leaking at the gasket, thanks everyone for the help, I bought a eight dollar roll of gasket material and made all four new intake gaskets 1/32" thick the gaskets that we're there were like paper thin, the motor sounds good now that I can hear it
