Hey looking into buying a new bike. Not the most tech savy person, is this a bike that needs lots of work, it has gone 78000 km. Is that far for this bike?

    Attaching some pictures aswell

You haven't done anything wrong. One of the things about these bikes that I appreciate is that they aren't horribly complicated. Even I have been able to work my way around them with virtually no electronic experience.

Depending on how much the previous owner followed recommended service guidelines, it might not need a ton of work, our it could be a significant time and money investment. If you aren't familiar with older bikes, it might be a good idea to take an acquaintance that is along with you. I don't know that the xj400 made it to north America in any numbers, so I haven't seen much about them. Regardless, the xj is a great platform, and if you're willing to learn, a great bike to ride and wrench on.

That bike looks well cared for.
Although it's mileage is higher than ideal if it's been properly maintained should be good for a few more

It's not a high mileage bike at all. Given the age of the machine it's a sign that it was ridden (and maybe even cared for) instead of sitting in a garage to rot.

There was a discussion on this model not too long ago...... basically, it's an xj400 maxim engine in an xj550 seca frame and the 550 seca parts----- kind of like the 900rk/750rl idea but with a 400/550r thing going on instead.

    I believe it was a Japanese-market-only bike

Pretty good looking bike, from what I can tell in the pic. As far as being tech savy, these have got to be the least complicated bikes to work on. The biggest issue I have found with them is getting the time to do the work.

Everything looked really good about the bike, all the needs to be done is change tired and replace the rubber thingy between the carb and the engine. If anyone know whats the name of that, an point me in a direction to find it, that would be nice.

It's a doohickey! Not sure how you'd go about finding parts for a Japan only model. Perhaps eBay Japan? Translation is a bit dicey, so shop carefully. Xs400 parts are completely different from your xj's

The rubber thingy between engine and carbs may be able to be sealed with RTV if the cracks are not to bad. I did it on my XJ550 and it works fine (doesn't look as pretty as new...someday I will get the new parts from XJ4ever).

Search RTV fix intake boots motorcycle for lots of information on resealing the boots.
