I'm sure I'll get mocked for this, but this is only my second bike and I have only been riding for a year or so.
I have an '82 Maxim and would like to check out the fuses and stuff. How the heck to you take off or swing up the seat? On my last bike, a '72 R5, all I had to do was undo a latch.
Sorry for such a dumb question but someone here can feel all warm and fuzzy inside for helping.
    Thanks.

not sure if the design is the same on seca's but heres how i do it.

there should be two hinges that hold your seat on the bike. inside each hinge is a bolt and at the end of that bolt is a metal clip that holds the bolt there. all you do is take like needle nose pliers and just pull off the metal clip. and then slide the bolt out. do that on both hinges and the seat will come off easy.

    hope this helps.

There are 2 latches, one under either sides of the seat i think just under the grab bar. You have to open both sides then the back part of the seat will come loose. lift the back of the seat then pull back toward the rear of the bike. Once you have it off turn it over and you will understand how the tab in the front holds it down.

somebody showed me or I wouldn't have figured it out either.

On my '82 Maxim, there is a lever just below the seat in the rear, on the right side of the bike. There is a lock there, the ignition key fits. Turn the key in the lock, this releases that lever. Then just push the lever, and the seat should pull right off.

On my 83 Midnight you have to use the key on the oposite direction of the helmet lock to be able to open the two latches.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the replies on this.
What dandrewk said ended up being the closest. Except there was no lock. Just a small lever behind the grab bar on the right side. Pushed it in and it came right off.
Very easy but I guess it will be a snap for someone to get a free seat if I leave it in the wrong place.

As per a Yamaha XJ650J owners manual from the XJCD…..

    Seat Lock
To open the seat lock, insert the key in the lock and turn it counterclockwise and pull the lever backwards.

In reinstalling the seat, insert the lobe on the seat front into the receptacle on the frame, then pull the lever backwards and push down the seat at the end. Push the lever forwards so that the seat is securely hooked in place, then turn the key clockwise to the original position to lock.

The seat lock and the helmet holder are the same item, just turn the key clockwise to release the helmet holder wire loop. The “lever” is located between the seat lock and the general location of the rear turn signal mount on the right side of the bike.

Do you have a key cylinder in the middle of the grab bar rail about midway between the turn signal and shock mount on the right side? Your seat won't lock down if the lock isn't there!

Well it seems to secure down and I can't pull it off. But there is a small lever, about three inches long, that if I press it in towards the bike it detaches the rear of the seat. Then I just pushed the seat forward towards the front and the seat came right off.
But there is no lock or cylinder to speak of.

I would like to get the XJCD. I emailed the US contact on the website weeks ago but he never emailed me back. Anyone savy enough with computers to create a torrent for them?

Do you have the stock grab bar that wraps around from rear shock mount over the fender to the other shock mount? If you do then their should be a hole in the grab bar rail where the lock cylinder would be sticking through. Check the frame in that location for a mounting point that the helmet lock would be bolted onto. It may have been removed by previous owner!

Yeah, thanks for not ripping me up on something basic like this guys.
And Nick, your right. There is a hole on my grab bar that was covered by my side bags. So it looks like a PO removed the lock.

That little locking pin can get quite grody. It probably got to be too much of a hassle, so a PO just yanked it.

Same here. I did get an email, two weeks ago, saying he was shipping the CD. Nothing came, and he hasn't (yet) responded to an email asking about it.

Don't worry! You will get the CD set as long as you made sure of your return address being clearly written. Did you send to Brad B for it? He has about two hours a week he can call his own.. He is trust worthy and dependable. Take care.

Oh, well, hey we can make fun of you if you'd like.

Yamaha seat latches are an interesting exercise in... well interesting.

On the 550 Seca, you have to turn the key AND pop a latch that's nearly impossible to find by feel.

On the 650 Seca the seat latch is hanging down like a locomotive brake handle, I don't remember if you need the key or not.

On the 550 Max you have goofy little rubber strap things.

I think the seat retention system was pretty low on the engineering department's checklist.

My '82 latches with a lick and a promise as the latch attempts to grasp the canardly pin. Good thing I'm usually there to keep the seat seated.

550 Maxim, open the little boot ( trunk) at the rear of the seat, look up to the top inside and you will see two rubber bands with clips on, pull them off the hooks and the rear of the seat is free, pull the seat back and its off the bike, good luck
