    Ok,hi everyone, i just bought xj600n 94....and I have a fairly simple question...
-How do I get that stupid streeing to lock, i do have the key 4 it....it turns counterclockwise 90 degreese, but it won't stay in that position.....dude that sold me the bike, didn't show me how to lock it, just told me, put the key in, turn the steering to the opposite side of the stand (to the right side) and it will be locked....well, guess what, it isn't...i really tryed everything......not a must-know question, but it's really torturing my brain, and since this is a new bike 4 me....i don't have an idea....Oh btw, the key lock is behind the forks, under the gas tank....if someone needs to ask that thing.....k, that's all from me, i hope i didn't put this topic in a wrong section, i don't go on forums very often, so i maybe made a misstake.....thx 4 any kind of help
    cheers

dunno about your bike but i just turn my bars all the way to the left. (towards the stand. you shouldn't be turning them away from the stand, that is bad for the bikes stability while parked) then once the bars are all the way to the left you turn the key left (counter clockwise) you may have to fiddle a bit and push the key in slightly to get it to work. make sure you dont turn it so far that you put the bike in park. youll know becuase the dash lights and license plate lights will turn on. lemme know if that works.

btw welcome to the boards. youll find that this place will be your new home soon.

I turn my forks to the left with the left handle bar closest to the tank.

Well...that's just the point, if i turn the handlebars all the way to the left, i can't get the key out, :(, because then the left fork is blocking it, and ofc, i have just on and off positions on the igniton...so, i guess i'll have to keep trying, mb the key lock is broken, and that's the reason it wont lock....don't know, but it really sux, i can turn the handlebar in whatever direction i want, it just doesn't lock....with the key in the ignition, out of the ignition, in the handlebars lock, or not....it allways stays unlocked.....damn i'm haveing trouble with it.....
Ohh, btw, thx 4 the welcomeing....i think too, this is going to be my other home :D

doing some searching, so far i found someone who said this...

"My XJ600N has the steering lock separate from the ignition, mounted to the left of the frame, forward of the tank. Turn bars right to use it. I agree that it looks less stable that way, it's also quite fiddly to get it to engage, so I usually just put the disc lock on instead."

so you have to take the keys out of the ignition and into the steering lock? which is located on the side of the bike?

It's a different key, and the ignition key wouldn't fit in there, so i can't be wrong in that case :D

    so it says...

    To lock the steering
1.)Turn the handle bar all the way to the right.
2.)Open the steering lock cover and insert the key.
3.)Turn the key 1/8 counter clockwise, push it in while turning the bar slightly to the left, and then turn the 1/8 clockwise.
4)Check to make sure the steering is locked, remove the key and close the cover.

    any luck?

Turn it to the LEFT ... All the way.

    Turn the Key to LOCK.

Move the Bars slightly while pushing down on the key while you "Line-up" the Detent with the Sliding Lock piece.

All you have to do is "Find" the spot where the locking pin will slide out into the notch on the frame.

Hunt for it while you try locking the front ... you'll find it!

k, my bike doesn't have the new version of the ignition....so, my lock 4 the steering is on the left side of the frame

    Well, then ...

You can try the Universal Method.
    Oil it!
Maybe it needs a shot of Oil to be less of a pain in the backside.
    Can't hurt ... oiling it!

    No.
    Not retarded.
    My timing is "Advanced"

Why don't you see if she can lock the steering.
Maybe we'll find-out if it's a Mechanical Defect or some other problem.

I think you find me to be more than a little-bit helpful as time goes on. I'm quite sure you'll be able to rely on my experience with doing the chores on the motorbike more helpful than advice from your significant other.

If your bike has been upgraded to Roller Bearings rather than Ball Bearings, you might not have the alignment to get the Pall to extend into the slot.

    Or ...

If the Steering was locked and someone tried to force the handlebars out of the locked position ... the Pall could be deformed or bent.

You might have to take the lock off there and do a little bit of filing to get the Pall to slide into the Lock Slot, once again. Or straighten-out the locking slot on the side of the headset to get the alignment straightened-out.

Give her my warmest regards ...

Nice to have you on board. I hope you figure out that steering lock. I hope it just something retarded and you laugh when you get it figured-out.

This is a fun place you've found.
I get a laugh or two every week, at least!

I know my bike was stolen once, when I was a kid. Must be why I cannot get the lock to engage. How hard is it to get to and check? Or am I better off just sticking with my rotor lock? I think that lock is better in theory, not sure what everyone else thinks. It would be a pain to pick, but I am just an amateur at that.

A lock may make you feel better ... but, the truth is: "A lock will only keep out an honest man."

Yeah, but if it is much easier to just push a bike to somewhere less conspicous, are you going to bother with one you have to screw with for a while where it is at? This bike of mine was already stolen once before, they pushed it away and hotwired it down the road. Another wise man once said: "Better safe than sorry."

You need to forget that piddly steering lock and get one of these:
    http://www.kryptonitelock.com/Products/ ... 0&pid=1093
    [IMG]

I picked one up after my bike was knocked over a few months ago. The impact of the (PLASTIC!!) gauge cluster smacking into the ignition lock cylinder as the bike fell over into a mailbox was enough to snap the lock right off, leaving it wide open for any schmo with a screwdriver to take. Yah. Thats some high security alright. This sucker is big enough to go fork tube to fork tube, through the front wheel. And its twice as thick as that dinky little pin that sticks 1/2" into the triple tree. Add their New York Noose and you can chain the bike to a stationary pole/rack/etc. Set you back a hundred bucks (plus 50 for the Noose), but whats your bike worth to you?
