my newly acquired 82 xj 750 seca's speedo is not working and has its needle broken halfway down, investigating why it wasn't working at all it appears the speedo is seized and has twisted the drive off the end of the cable, a new speedo cable should not be a problem but can the speedo be repaired and the needle replaced or just purchase a second hand unit,

you can glue a toothpic on it and paint it. the needle does not like to be removed in the plastic part of the needle there is a brass insert that pushes over the pin on the speedo. some times it will come off clean othertimes not.

the cables do break and not because of the speedo

buying a new unit is an option but first look in the diy forum for the speedo disection

this link will help dissemble them

Confirm that the speedo is locked up before proceeding. Cables can, and do, break without anything being wrong with the speedometer gears. Most often this is from years of use without the cable being removed, cleaned, and lubricated.
Most likely you'll just need a new cable, and to fix that needle (a toothpick, superglue, and a bit of paint will do the job).
Be very careful when removing the cluster cover. The glass is in fact real, untempered, glass. It can break and there is a risk that you will be cut.

Unhook the speedometer cable from the drive housing at the wheel and see if you can spin the cable and make the speedometer move.........speedo quit working on my son's xj 550, and the only issue was when previous owner put the front wheel back on the tangs on the drive got bent out and didn't engage the gear all the way.

    While that's good advice....
Which mans that the hub drive is working (though it would not be a bad idea to pull it for cleaning and regreasing).
