XJ650 Maxim - Crankcase Hose question

Hi guys! Glad to have found a place like this! So I bought the bike mentioned yesterday. It has had a decent amount of work done. Airbox removed and replaced with pod filters and exhaust modified. My question is this, is it ok for the crankcase hose to be unattached? I know with the airbox its supposed to be attached there but with these pod filters it has nowhere to go. Before you think that this is a damn question, though it is, Im asking because I have had significant amount of oil blowing out of the house. To the point where I thought I was going to get a degree burn on my life from the amount of oil shooting out from the house while I was at a traffic light.
Here are some pictures of the hose below. I know some people attach an airfilter instead of this hose and don't get the pros/cons of that.
The last owner told me he did the oil before selling it and I wonder if he was overzealous. Ive read that too much oil will cause leakage through the hose and am just praying its a simple fix. Thanks for your advice/thoughts

 

With the bike on it's center stand start it up, run for a minute, turn it off. Kneel down on the right hand side and look through the small window by the brake pedal, watch the oil level... it will take a few minutes but it should rise up to just below 1/8 - 3/16" the top of the window.

I suggest running it first because if it is overfilled there will be no 'bubble' on top and you will just be looking at a window...

What year is your bike?
Did the PO give you a box of spare parts? Was there an airbox in with the spare parts?

 

Change the oil and filter, so that you know the level, and type is correct, and put a breather filter on it. Or source a stock air box.

 

And make sure you don't spray oil on the back tire. When my girl puked up her guts, I stopped riding immediately, as it was spraying out right ahead of the tire.

 

it's probably too much oil, but if that's not so, under that shifter cover there's a kind of baffle that the gasket for the cover is part of. maybe the PO did something in there

 

there is a pod for the hose. the longer the hose the better .
