IMG_2429.PNG So the stock airbox on my 82 XJ 650 maxim is ugly as hell and I'm bobbing it out, today I ripped the box out and put aftermarket k&n style filters on it...... long story short the thing is not running correctly..... any opinions or ideas as to why this has happened?

4 things pods pods pods pods now you need to rejet your carbs.
also put a clamp on the fuel line to filter

CV carbs were not designed to be poded or yamaha would have made them that way

your mixture is screwed up and you now have incorrect pressure inside your diaphragm chamber.
This means your throttle slides no longer correspond to your right wrist.
They will struggle to open, you will give it more throttle, then they will slam wide open, terrible thing to ride.

You're not trolling us are you?

Also, not using stock manifolds messes up the airflow into the carbs. Contrary to popular opinion, the cone filters do not increase performance. They actually allow too much flow, which is bad for the air/fuel mix, and leads to lean conditions, which could cause detonation and engine meltdown. Rejetting and attaching the filters to the stock manifolds may help, but there is no set formula for success. You will have to choose between looks and performance.

Bigbird0, first of all welcome to the forum! Congrads on the bike and hope you really enjoy working on your bike. The reason the other posts are telling you info about your PODS is just that, it is much harder to make work then the stock airbox.

With that being said, it you are sold on the PODS then do the reading and get ready to buy some new jets and then maybe mod the PODS to allow the air to flow correctly into the carbs. Some PODS block air coming into the back of the carbs...have to see how thick the rubber is and if it blocking the inlets on the carbs. Once you do these things you will have to start to check the plugs for correct color and then adjust from there. Good luck and stick with it.

Don't get caught in the rain ...pods will suck up water real quick ..an engine full of water not cool. Also be aware pods do not do a very good job of filtering some where I had an article from cycle world they did a test of pods and stock filters .... the stock flter won . Lots of luck you will be pulling them and experimenting with jets. One more item fabricate some type of bracket to support back of carbs. Do not rely on the boots alone weight of the carbs an crack boots .

Was the bike running correctly with the 'ugly'* airbox?

... and since everyone is a critic ;)
The paper fuel filter is oft times accused of not allowing enough flow to properly feed the carbs.
I have either used nothing or the brass style fuel filter - can't say yea or nay about paper - just that there are tales...

*You really can't see the airbox so how does one quantify it as being ugly?
Unless it is really just that pods look so cool?

And THEY really do, pods really do look cool, it is just that it is difficult to make them perform well on an XJ (as noted above). But along with that I am at an age where I don't give two turds about looking cool anymore... Soooo now you have a bike that looks cool but it runs 'as ugly as hell'... just sayin'

How does it run now that the stock air box is back on.

If you insist on pods, I will pass on advice from another XJer: "Get the bike running really well in stock setup before trying to modify."

Seems like good advice. I found getting my one owner, stock xj back up to optimal running was a process over time of addressing one issue after another. Each time I did one small thing, it caused it to run better overall. Some things masked as another issue (for example, I chased down a surge for a whole summer that I thought was either ignition or carb, turned out to be worn chain and sprockets).

    Enjoy your ride.

The po on my seca put a K&N filter in the stock airbox ...never did run right ..put paper filter in and it runs great .. So just saying bike needs to be running right first.
