So I've now put 200 miles or so on my rebuilt '89 Radian engine, taking care to vary RPM and avoid lugging the engine.

While shopping for a new clutch cable today, I noticed that Maxima is selling a "Break-in oil", 10W30 in weight? Should I consider using that or is it too late?

    Also... what's a break-in oil?

(For the record, I'm using Rotella T 15W40 right now.)

Generally break in oil has a higher zinc content that regular oil. Your probably ok as is , I used this on one of my VW engines did not notice a bit of difference .

When I bought my 83 XJ550 brand new, I'm sure it just had the spec oil from the factory. I do recall the dealer had me change it at a shorter interval the first time, and to vary speeds for the first 1k as you doing.

Currently, I use the same Rotella you are using.

Interesting, thanks. This is being sold by a motorcycle-specific online shop, weird.

Ima stay put and just refill her with Rotella at the next change.

All, I repeat ALL engines leave fine metal particles in the oil after being rebuilt. No matter the oil used, that's why the short change period on the initial oil. On cars I always used cheap oil that was in spec for initial startup, let the engine idle for about twenty minutes then changed the oil and filter. I would cut open the filter to inspect the metal to make sure it wasn't major, then change it again after about 200 miles with good oil after. If you have a spin on filter putting a strong magnet on the filter for initial is a good idea.
