Recently rebuilt the carbs on my 83' xj750 maxim. Rejetted main jets with 124's and my pilots with 43's. We then replaced the broken airbox with pod filters and ran the crankcase breather hose into a smaller pod filter under the seat. After some tuning we got the bike running fairly smoothly. After the bike got hot and was driving around oil began to leak from multiple spots on the engine. Anyone have any advice? Where did we go wrong?

    was it not leaking before?
clean off motor then id leak locations.
likely places for leaks are the oil filter housing clean off mating surfaces install and aline it then torque the bolt to spec. same with the drain plug and replace the crush washer on the plug. check tightness of valve cover. you may need to replace the donuts on the bolts then see if valve cover still leaks replace the valve cover gasket retorque head while valve cover is off.
make sure oil pan bolts are torqued correctly. I could go on with all the places that there are seals and gaskets but that would not help unless you can give us more exact info on where oil is showing up.

It appears to be leaking from the cam chain tensioner gasket, one allen bolt on the valve cover gaskget, and one seal on the front, behind the headers, directly opposite the cam chain tensioner.

Change your valve cover bolt donuts and then if it still leaks change the valve cover gasket. . then see if the cam chain tensioner still leaks.

do a compression test to see if head gasket is leaking low readings would be a sign of that.

    Patrick,

We are just trying to track this down for you. Is this something that just happened or is this new? Oil will leak top down and make it look like it is coming from everything. Once you tell us if it is new oil leak or one that was old.

Baby power works well for finding leaks as it sucks up the oil.

Bought the bike about a month ago. It was leaking from the valve cover gasket when i bought it. We resealed it and the bike didnt leak at all. The bike was having trouble starting when it wasnt warmed up and idling fast once it was hot. So we decided to rebuild the carbs.
We rebuilt the carbs with bigger jets and installed pod filters. During that process my buddy removed the valve cover gasket to "check the shims". We resealed it. It seemed fine until I ran it hard for about 15 minutes. That is when it began to leak.
I cleaned the engine with degreaser and water this morning. Then i let it run and watched. The leak appears to be from one screw in the valve cover and from the next seal down on the motor.
My buddy thinks that the crankcase gases built up pressure and caused the leaks. I removed the hose from the crankcase vent and placed a pod filter directly on the crankcase.

That bolt in the 4th picture is where the main leaking is happening. The valve cover screw is easy enough to fix.

Ok thanks for the help. I resealed the bolt on the valve cover and removed that hose from the crankcase breather and put it directly into a pod. The leak has slowed to almost nothing. Checked oil level still pretty much full.
