1982 Yamaha XJ750J Maxim $1,000 (located in Alden Mi 49659)
Great starter bike, low mileage, only has light "lay down" dents/scratches. DOES NOT CURRENTLY RUN.
Good: Brand new tires spring 2017, New Clutch cable, very fresh oil change, Brand new spark pugs, new brake handle, waxed/polished paint on tank, and good brakes.

Bad: Tachometer cable needs replacing, small oil leak from cylinder head (does not cause any real oil lose), scratches/dents , and for some reason about a month ago it just would not start. Selling so I don't have to store for winter.

I was told by a "Yamaha bike guy" that the issue was between the Ignition coils (said they both tested good) and the battery (tested good). Wife is tired of it being a "Project Bike" and wants it gone.

82 750 maxim doesn't have a tach cable.... they were electric tach.

    Didn't start- does that mean:
    Doesn't turn over---
    Turns over, but wont fire
Fires, but won't kick into running

My bet is the battery really ISN'T good.

    .
    1) It has a cable that runs from front left fork at wheel end to the "dash box" and plugs into the Tachometer, what would call it?

    2) Cranks over , and fuel can be smelled in comparison chamber, but no or bad timing on spark. I was told issue was between Battery and ignition coil.

    3) I have had two Local Yamaha bike dealers "assist" me in diagnosing possible issues. Both said it was too old to get parts ( so they won't touch the bike). I either need it running soon ,or sell it to help afford a newer bike that is easier to find parts.

    Speedometer cable.

They just can't get the parts from Yamaha anymore and the markup %. They probably wouldn't touch it anyway, liability on making it run right is too risky. Not many dealers/shops working on older carb'd bikes.

I would call it a speedometer cable that plugs into the speedometer.

    Did you check fuses?
Did you check to see if coils are unplugged?
Did you check to see if TCI is unplugged?

They are not assisting you in diagnosing. They are trying to assist you in BUYING A NEW BIKE.
    1. It's NOT too old to get parts. There's plenty of parts right here.
2.they won't touch it because THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO DIAGNOSE IT because they can't hook it up to a computer.
    3. WE ARE RIGHT HERE. WE KNOW THESE BIKES.
    4. Go and buy a newer bike that IS EASIER TO FIND PARTS----Why/ so you still have a bike that doesn't run and you have to find parts for? WE are here. WE have the parts. The COLLECTIVE will help you diagnose the issue. YOU need to be ready to go one step at a time and not take a 'shotgun' approach trying to dig arose a gazillion things at once.

Tell her you are working on it with us----let her see the questions, and answers, your follow-ups and progress, etc......

You will need to make sure you use the correct terms for parts, though......for example---calling a speedo cable a tach cable, etc......[/QUOTE]

What really funny is that so many Yamaha repair shops can't get the parts. The one right down the street from me is an example.....
    .
I'll go in and ask for a part---"what is it? We don't have it, and it's not available anymore. You're out of luck. We'll try to find it, but give us a week or two to look. We'll call you if we locate one".

Then I'll call Len and order the part.

3 days later, I'll go in--
    "any luck?"....
    "Nope...nobody can get it anymore"......
"Are you sure you're looking for one of these?"........
    'Wtf!!"......

Then I tell them, "If you ever need to order anything, let me know......."

    I walk out snickering

Ok so I did miss label the cable ( it is the spedo cable).
Checked fuses, and the ignition coils were tested ( sever different times by three different people/shops) and plugged in.Not sure on TCI plugged in ( will check that when I get home.

#3 does not help me when I have very limited access to Internet ( Use Internet from Fire station and work office).
So far all I have been told is the same thing over, and over and over again ( in the Tech issue thread, where most read last post and not from the start: http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threa...suddenly-wont-start.116483/page-2#post-585232). Soi we can move this part of conversation back to that thread.

If I'm reading the other forum correctly, you've had several different people test the coils, and you likewise got several different answers. THAT makes me ALSO wonder if someone didn't hook them back up in the correct order, or didn't put the right clips from the harness to the correct coils.

If this is something that happened just from being tipped over, it's not going to be something big...we just have to find it.

I understand your feelings on the subject. I had to sell the Seca for similar reasons. Used the money to help with the purchase of my Rebel. I kinda regret selling the xj, but as you see, I still hang out here all the time, and am searching for a replacement Yamaha. I want a running one this time. I'd rather spend my time and money on riding than wrenching.

I have a lot of 750 maxim parts. I did the same thing called all the motorcycle shops I was willing to drive to and I got, " We don't want to touch the bike and good luck with finding parts". I found this site and it made me keep the bike and I found a almost complete 82 750 maxim and a 650 I have my eye on for parts.
