I purchased a '82 XJ650 that had been stored in a shed for 12 years for $150. Took the carbs to church, included a running sync. Overhauled the petcock. Adjusted the valves. Ran like a top. Rebuilt the Caliper. Replaced the brake lines with braided steel. Rebuilt the forks. New tires. Added a few custom touches like a solo seat, shortened the rear turn stalks and integrated the stop lamp into the rear turn housings ( I thought this was really cool), and 8" mini apes. Fixed a broken speedo needle. Installed in-line fuses. Got to the point I needed to bring to my shop ( I work at a Ford dealership as a warranty tech) for some welding on the seat and kick stand as well as some fine tuning. But life comes fast and aside from starting her up every few days to brag about my new found carb rebuilding experience, she sat. This last time she sat for about a month. I was looking her over last week and saw the oil level was high. Tested the petcock, and it leaked BAD. Replaced petcock with a $8 Amazon manual valve special. It looks good, works well too. No leaks. Replaced engine oil. Cranks, won't start. Ehh, happens. I need to address the safety switch soon anyways. Still no start. Plenty of spark.... Pulled the plugs and disconnected the igniter box to run a compression test. She only gains about 15-20 psi per rev. ALL 4 CYLINDERS. Pulled out my trusty boroscope and looked into cyl 4. Cylinder wall looks like s-!&@. Corrosion and scratches. I washed the damn cylinders. Dropped a tbls of oil into each cylinder, installed new plugs and tried again. Still dead.
On the bright side I did get to ride her once for about 5 Miles.

Anyone looking for some real nice parts? Only bout 5 miles on them...

    EDIT=
It does build to normal comp of around 125-165 psi.

I'm not sure what the problem is then? Make sure the battery is FULLY charged, the air filter removed, and the carb throttles fully opened before doing a compression test.

    Sorry about the language.
All listed requirements met. I've never seen an engine take that long to build comp.

Bad fuel in bowls and a slow tool. She belched some nasty nasty smoke and fired right up. Still takes 15 or so revs (10-15psi per rev) to bring my matco comp tester to 150psi, bu that can only be due to my tester. Guess I freaked out a bit.

Lame. Censorship is lame. I am not 12. I speak like a grown-up. Nothing about "keep it clean" in forum rules. Is this new? When did we get to this? I am quite upset. No jokes. My post is my speech, I resent the edit.

Please don't. You are in no way responsible for matti's inability to grow up, or the blow back that is the inevitable result of said inability. If anyone should apologize, Matti should, but if I know him, he won't. He's pretty unrepentant.

I guess I missed the fireworks...

Sounds like you made a mistake, corrected/ apologized* and now (as mentioned) we move on - a rather civilized and acceptant group here - and then there's Matti; crude at times, funny more often then not and just a plain old punk - I wouldn't want him any other way and fantasize about meeting him in person and having a few drinks.

    * there has been a small collection of members who don't correct for undesirable behavior and sooner than later they become non-members.

    A. who are you calling old?
    B. I fantasize about you too, Stumpy! Here's how it goes:
We're at a swap meet, or maybe an xj carb clinic. I'm wearing those chaps. You know the ones.o_O Our eyes meet. Somehow, I recognize you in spite of never having met you. You recognize me by the lynch mob that's forming around me... I look at you and say "Are you Stumpy, or are you just happy to see me?" Then I get kicked out and banned from all future gatherings, and peace is restored to the Galaxy. The next time you think of me is when you testify in my trial.

Now back to business: anyone have advice or help for poor Reuben, or want to buy some of his stuff? Lol craziest sidetrack ever.

    Hold on.
    Not enough said.
I personally know someone who was recently banned from here for using expletives in one single post after being needled by another member. His attempts to keep the thread focused were overshadowed by this wise guy's negative remarks.
Preferential members and moderators are obviously exempt from this posting requirement.

    Well then...

She's fine, I just freaked out. Had to drain the float bowls and let the engine idle for a bit, but we are ok. I will be looking in into why the cyl wall on 4 looked so rough but its holding comp.

    @MattiThundrrr :p

@LarryMc the way you describe it, it sounds like the person you knew wasn't treated fairly. I don't know the person and I don't know what happened publicly and/ or behind the scenes (PM's, e-mail, etc). From where I sit, there certainly could be biased treatment to long time members/ contributors. Is that fair? No of course not - fair is where you go to see cows, sheep, horses and eat deep-fried food on sticks.

Took me 53 years to figure this out:
Life is not fair, no one except your mother really cares about your problems, you aren't always right and don't take stuff personally, life is temporary.
    54 years for this:
    Dogs are better than people.
Many people love money but money will NEVER love you back, those that love money are in a toxic and dysfunctional relationship- and I believe that is the fundamental problem with much of today's society.

I know I have "crossed the line" and was publicly (and privately at least once) corrected about forum expectations by the moderators. I swallowed the bitter pill of "not always being right" reflected back that if someone else had posted what I did, chances are good that I wouldn't think it was too cool.... apologized and moved on.

Everyone here is human, not perfect, I believe the moderators are doing the best they can. If you choose you could become a Premium Member and campaign to become a Moderator yourself. Me? I would never want that type of responsibility.

@REUBEN sorry your thread went asunder - glad things are good!

And just cause I never know when to shut up... my dad used to say I had diarrhea of the mouth, how's that for a visual?

The typed/ written word can be very difficult to interpret. Depending on both the author and the audiences disposition at the time, a posting in a thread can be taken many different ways.

And Larry- good for you for standing up and speaking your truth.

Well I am glad the bike is running again and that you are happy with her. I think the rest of the reading is well not for me, so lets keep helping the good folks with the Xj issues and keep on smiling.
