    Hello all,
My name is Mike and I’m a welder/fabricator not too far away from Portland Oregon. Just wanted to say hi and ask a few questions about my new purchase.

I just bought n 82’ 750 Maxim for 200 bucks. So far I’ve had to dump the old gas and replace the battery. Which leads me to my first question: I bought the new battery at Schucks and installed it to find that it didn’t have the center wire connector on it. Is that why my battery icon is on?
Also, I have been looking at bikes of my year and see that the instrument clusters are totally different. The sticker on the neck reads: JYA15 R00 3 CA007397 What model do I have?

Any input would much be appreciated.

    -Mike

Check out this site and find your model for a good electrical diagram.

Oh and welcome to the site! I look forward to pictures of your progress.

15R makes it a 1982 XJ750J Maxim. And yes that sensor wire will make the computer flash the battery warning. There is a fix so search for it on this site using the search mode in the left sidebar. Oh and ....$200 is a steal! You won't be sorry!

Thanks for the link. And I found the fix. Easy enough to do.
Yeah, I thought 200 wasn't a bad deal for a running bike. It does need work, but I have all winter to tackle those little blemishes.
Is there a history for the maxim model line, online?

Tell me about it, I havent found a cheap set yet, or even an expensive one for that matter! I am thinking of just making something else to go there instead, maybe fab. something a little bigger than the original w/ polished aluminum.

Nice buy on the bike, even better cause its running!

I took the cluster apart to see if I could free up the tach a little with sucess. But then I realized the speedo cable was missing and the speedo was loose. So I took a closer look at it and saw that it was froze up and the mounting screws were missing. And another closer look yet, I noticed a crack in the glass. So I think I'll repace the whole thing... Anyone have one for sale?
Thats about as far as I have gotten so far.

    -Mike

OH yeah... It didn't come with the battery side cover.. so I called the seller, and they are going to look for it. They think it's laying around somewhere from when they tried to charge the old battery.

    I've posted this link before:

This site has service manuals for most bikes. Downloadable PDF's. The one I downloaded for my XJ650 Has some text about the history of the Maxim, and explains the ID code thing. Sounds like you may be in need of a service manual anyway.
(Well, I didn't actually post it as a "link." You may have to copy the URL and paste it into your address bar. The username and password are generic.)
Hope this helps. Welcome to the forum.

I cant log in with that username/password ha ha ha, wouldnt have minded getting ahold of the 750 manual myself. Got the haynes in the mail, hopefully be here tomorrow. I sent them an e-mail to see how I could join though, if that is service manual might have some different/more stuff than the haynes manual does.

I sent an email as well. I also used an online translation tool to register with their forum and could not use my username/password to download the file. so I will have to wait for an email reply.
From what I could learn of their source code on that page, the files are around 130megs. So they must have scanned whole books and put them in PDF format. Which makes me wonder about copyright laws. I'm sure the laws in Hungaria are quite different than here. Then again, I could be way off on my assumptions.

    Welcome Mike,

The XJ cd has a wealth of accumulated knowledge. Well worth the price.... and legal!

Purchase details are listed as a sticky in the XJ chat forum.

I thought I had a bargain at $1200 (aussie dollars), you beat me by a grand!

    Have fun.
