Checking Valve Clearance

    Hey guys, I checked my valve clearances today here's what I got.

    1 2 3 4

    Int. .002 .003 .004 .002


    Exh. .005 .006 .009 .005

    So from what I see except for 3I and 2E (which are within spec) and 3E (which is to loose) all the rest are tight.

    What are the disadvantages of tight valves, and how cold is too cold to check the valves, I've got an unheated garage and it was about +5 C today. Will that skew the results??

    I would, but the shipping alone would have bought the feeler gauges already! They are really cheap, I just got a set for about 5 bucks at harbor freight. Any auto parts store should carry them.

    Tight valves will only get tighter over time. Tight valves will overheat; then ... burn.

    A burned valve kills compression. The lack of compression on the piston will cause oil consumption issues and misfiring.

    Eventually, the Cylinder has no Ignition of the Fuel Mixture and the bike loses power.

    The burned Valve can only be repaired by replacing the Valve during a Valve Job which requires removing the Head.

    All easily avoided by keeping the Valve Clearances with specs.
