I am looking to replace my instrument cluster on my 82 seca (the big rectangle). Would the "rectangle" cluster from an 82 maxim work in its place?

it should work, our wire's are pritty much the same, only big difference is where the warning lights are located mine are on the bottom vs yours on top.

I've a bit of bad news. I've just installed an 82 750J Max instrument cluster (electronic) on my 82 750RJ Seca, no dice. Lights come on that ought not to be lit and the bike runs horribly (I'm not sure if it is the coils just yet, they were the cause of a no-start condition earlier). I've not taken the time to run through the schematics to compare the two but everything plugged right in so I "assumed" that it ought to drop right in. I'll take a long, through look-see this weekend and post the results.
Of course this is rather the opposite of what you are trying to do so it might work swapping Seca to Maxim, I just haven't enough info to tell you yea or neigh just yet.

hmmmmm...... how curious. they are so similar. my cluster works fine, its just tooooo crusty to try and cleanup / restore.

anyways, thanks for the input, you just saved me about 50 bucks. and if you know anyone who is getting rid of a nice cluster off a seca, have them drop me a line:)

    LOL....kms......you are funny.

officer - "do you know how fast you were going son?"

me - "ummmm......fast enough to get your attention?"

thanks for the ebay posts, i did see those. i do have another motive though. the maxim cluster seems shorter than the seca cluster, and im going to need that extra clearance if i am to put the "streetfighter" style fly screen on that i wanted. guess i'll have to wait on ol' Robert, aka "yoda" to see whats down with the cluster:)

    thanks guys,
    -ryan

I just went with a cheap bicycle speedometer and it works better (more accurate) than the big square (did I mention ugly?) stock speedometer! I got it at a sport shop (Scheels Sports) Most bicycle shops should have them for under $30. Mine only works up to 85 mph. Now that I know how good they work, I'm going with a more expensive unit that will be good all the way up to 160 mph.
I can't wait to get rid of the stock unit off my bike now. I plan to use three small LED lights (blue = high beam, amber = turn signals, green = kick stand) hidden somewhere in the triple tree.>PD<

Ok, looked over the schematics for both my bike (82 750 Seca) and the donor (82 750 Maxim). Electrically, they are the same save a single ground wire supply in the small 9 pin connector, which I added. I am finding the wrong wires stuffed (forced) into my connectors!!! Nice job from the P.O.s mechanic!
I'm going to say that you should be able to swap over being mindful of that ground supply on the middle pin of the 9 pin connector.

I did a conversion on my old 82xj750j with the dash from a 82750 seca. Everything just went right together. No problems at all. I ran it that way until I found the correct dash for my bike and then swaped the seca dash out for the original type. I still have the seca dash if you are interested in it. 50.00 shipped to your door.

I have a 1981 Yamaha xj650 maxim. I am interested in replacing the stock speedo/tachometer with one that will give me a much higher speedometer reading, maybe someone out there can steer me in the right direction.

Everything on the gauga cluster was working when I replaced it with the stock on from an xj750 maxim. It has been sitting on a shelf ever since. I assume everything on it still works. I could send it to you and then you could install it and let me know, then send the payment. At this point I would rather see it get used than sit around. Let me know. Send me a PM

I have a cluster off of an 81 650 maxim if anybody is interested. I was told it works but I pulled it off the bike before I got the bike running so I can't confirm. I do know that the tach works as I have plugged that in for tuning.

Ok Trunks, I have finally figured out what happened on my swap. There are two 3 pin connectors in the harnesses and I swapped them. They both have a brown wire in them (they are part of the instrument cluster pigtails) and my harness was sufficiently faded to make the rest of the wires look the same colorwise in the low light I was working in.
Lesson here is work in spaces that are well LIT, not in receding sunlight in a backyard. The gauge cluster works just fine, now if I could figure out why my neutral light comes on every time I pull in the clutch lever....
Bottom line, the J model cluster will work on an RJ and vice versa.
