Driveshaft Removal

    I'm sure this has been covered but I cannot seem to find it. I am in the process of removing the motor from my 1982 xj750r Seca and need to reassure myself as to how things come apart. To seperate the driveshaft from the transmission do you remove the bolts that go through the round plate contacting the transmission (bolts go into aluminum of trans) or the four bolts on the steel "yoke" (bolts thread into "yoke" towards rear of bike)?
    I have removed all four bolts that thread towards the rear wheel and can now turn the driveshaft without it trying to turn the transmission. What I am concerned of is that once I undo the motor mount bolts and am ready to lift out the motor that I will find something else that I have not undone (ie a pilot shaft in the middle of those yokes that requires removal of something else).

    When I took mine out I just remember removing the 4 bolts in the "yoke" assuming you are taking about the piece under the shaft boot. I don't recall there being anything else right there that was in the way of removal, just a few wires above it. Then again this was like 3 years ago...

    Don't complicate matters for yourself. The easiest way to deal with separating the rear end from the engine is to undo the four bolts at the Universal Joint and pull the whole swing arm.

    Otherwise, you are going to venture into real headache territory.
    The driveshaft on your Seca is damped. Undoing the U-Joint and taking the whole rear end off there is going to save you a boat-load of time putting it back on.

    Remove the shock.
    Undo the rear brake.
    Undo the U-Joint.
    Loosen and pull the Swing-arm pivots ... and take the whole rear-end off if you think you need too.

    To remove just the engine ...
    You only have to undo the U-Joint.

    The easiest way to get the four U-Joint Bolts unfastened is to make yourself a bent wrench.

    Heat a Combination wrench and put a opposing 45-Degree bends in the end to be able to get a tight grip holding the Hexes while undoing the U-joint.

    After you heat the wrench and put the bends in it. Reheat it until it cherry and quench the wrench in a bucket of water to harden it back up.

    Use a 6-Point Box end.
    That will hold the Heads while you work on getting the nuts off.

    From the engine removal section of a Yamaha manual.....

    Section G Drive Shaft Joint states:
    1. Remove the coil spring holding the rubber boot.
    2. Pull the rubber boot from the drive shaft coupling to expose the joint bolts.
    3. Remove the joint bolts on the drive shaft coupling.

    Next in Section H it talks about removing the engine mounting bolts, foot rests, brake pedal, and right side muffler bracket assembly. Then it says to “slide the engine forward slightly and remove the engine to the right.” A note is added to position a box or other support to the right side of the motorcycle for the assistance when removing the engine.

    If you don't want to chew-up the frame ...

    Lay a few layers of masking tape down ... followed by a few layers of duct tape. Just in case it "Gets away on you or you have to get a better grip"

    Tuck a blanket in and have a piece of old carpet to set the mill on when it comes out. Save yourself scratching-up anything.
