Ok gents and ladies. I have an 82 650xj. Stored it for 2 years. Put it away running. Now the damn thing won’t start. New battery and new plugs. Was cranking it for a bit and only got it to backfire a few times. Even sprayed some starter fluid into the air intake and put a little gas in the plug holes. Still nothing. After a while my starter solenoid started to smoke. Now it sounds like a ‘spin’ noise in there.

What do you guys recommend I do first to get this back on the road?

Or does anyone want to purchase as is for $500?

church of clean for the carbs if it is backfiring your halfway there.
most likely your pilot jets are clogged and the enrichment circuit is clogged
    also replace your smoked solenoid.

Before you stored it, had any work been done to catch up on long-term maintainince, or did you just buy it running and ride it?
I'm asking so we can establish a basline for how to move forward with diagnosis and repair.

    Thanks for the reply.
Odds are that the age-related maintenance items have never been done. Check the intake boots for cracks, just go ahead and do a full teardown of the carbs (replacing the throttle shaft seals and idle mixture needle o-rings). Plan on this winter being your season to refresh the bike so you can enjoy riding, instead of chasing new problems every few months.

Start by reading The Information Overload Hour ( via the Read This First link in my signature).

The lack of fire with starting fluid points to an ignition issue. Check that the sidestand swich isn't stuck (a likely issue if you had it up on the center stand with the sidestand up), or pull the sidestand relay to check.
The Ultimate Relay, Switch, Sensor, and Diodes Guide
The next likely culprit is spark plug wires (or coils) that have cracked insulation, allowing the magic pixies to roam free.

You will find other things that need tended to, so be patient and work methodically.

One telltale as to the state of things: what are the date codes on the brake lines?

Press account - "In the Finals they faced the Blackhawks. The Bruins fell in six games, with three going into overtime, including an epic Game 1 in which a third overtime period was needed before it was settled. The only game Boston lost by more than one goal was Game 5 in which Chicago scored on an empty net in the last 17 seconds." - wouldn't exactly call it a route... and we're both tied with 6 cups a piece :)
