hello all, new member here. I’ve searched my heart out to no avail on this one. I recently purchased a 1981 Yamaha Maxim 550. Well that’s what the vin tells me. But the bike has a Seca tail section and is shaft drive. I’ve noticed everyone says they were all chain drive. Any input here? I’d upload a pic but not sure how to unfortunately. Any help would be great

Oh and it also has the square headlight and “Atari” looking gauge cluster if that helps at all

if it's shaft drive then its a 650 or bigger. I'm no expert but I think 'Ataris' are a feature of the 750 model - there should also be a cc mark cast into the barrels at the front.

From your description, you have a Seca 750.

Does the VIN on the title match the VIN on the steering neck?

Yes vin matched, I even ran the shorty vin to confirm the 17 digit vin. Motor and frame have same stamping. It comes up with an 1981 XJ550 Maxim. The 9 digit shorty number is 5g2-004470. And i used the decoder on here to verify the 17 digit. This is why I’ve gotten confused to what my bike is lol bikes also from Vermont so no title up here

If you used an online tool or database, it may be the problem. I know that one of the threads linking to a VIN decoding database was removed from public view because it was returning bad results for some models.
    Use this instead http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/tech-topic-model-id-and-vins.14577/

    5G2 is a 1981 XJ 750 Seca.

It was the link everyone recommended on here. It gave me the full vin and all. But I registered it with the full 17 digit vin. I verified by the barrel casting it is indeed a 750. So if it gave me the same 17 digit vin, does that mean it just gave me the wrong model Information?

Yea I verified that, I do appreciate all the replies guys. This forum is great. But my question now is why did the vin decoder say it was an 81 550 maxim? Has anyone else had that issue with it? I mean it gave me the proper 17 digit vin for the bike

Seems i recall something a little while back that people said not to use it til it got fixed. May be it was a valve shim program instead...but something seems to be triggering a faint memory back in the fog.

Just for a reference and security reasoning can anyone translate my shorty vin for me to the actual 17 digit vin? So I can double check. I got confused and lost in the whole article write up on how to do it. The middle part of my vin tag is actually worn off from the cables. So I went with what the guy registered it as last. So I only have JYA then blank and then BA004470. I think that website might be broken because it gave me a 5k5003 for my 17 digit vin

The short VIN is also stamped on the steering head, on the right side (and on the engine case). I linked the article with the guide on how to derive the long VIN.

Unfortunately I'm not in a cognitive state to check you work, otherwise I'd do that for you.

Yes I used the shorty vin to get my 17 digit vin on the decoder site that everyone recommends on the forum. Just weird it came up for an 81 550 maxim. I just got confused in all the reading on how to decipher it

I did all the math and got the check number. The vin it comes up with isn’t coming up as proper when I try to search it. And the decoder http://www.dissingermoto.com/ keeps giving me it as an 81 550 maxim. To my knowledge I haven’t done the math wrong and haven’t entered the shorty vin wrong.

Thank you for that, any clue why that decoder website gave me the 550 vin?
