What's up bro, I'm new too and just came in to possession of a non-running 81 XJ550. Right now t seems to be a no fire problem. Still scratching my head but I'll get it. I'm in Little Rock by the way. Good luck with your bike! I'm learning a lot on this forum for sure!

Best thing I can tell both of you guys is to listen to the people on this forum. They know what they're talking about. Follow their advice and reap the rewards. I've been a member of a few different forums throughout the years and this is the best one by far. Also, but up xj4ever for parts. Correct parts and very speedy shipping. I ordered late Monday night and the box was here waiting for me when I got off work tonight! Len is very helpful

JTricer, looks like we are in the same boat about now. I found an old XJ on craigslist not far from Little Rock awhile back.
Thought about buying it for parts if I could get it at the right price.......It was not

Welcome aboard, you will find SO MUCH info on this board. Lots of reading I see in your future ;) Lots of great people that will try to answer or sort out your issues in a timely manner. Once you get going it will all fall into place. "K-moe" has really good info in his signature, when you get a change look him up and start to read through all that stuff. It will take a while but will really help you out in the long run.

Again, welcome to the board and good luck with your project.

Welcome , please remember no question is a dumb question ...ask and you will get a lot of answers . Most of us geezers on here have a lot of motorcycle experience we will try to assist , but please listen and go slow and you will have a good running machine . Make a list of items to make bike safe to ride and reliable replace the brake hoses if they are rubber look for stamp date if it says 81,82,83 etc replace ,brake shoes/pads , rebuild calipers internal seals usually toast, in the case of the 550 inspect chain and sprocket for wear and stretch, and signs of lack of lubrication, check age and condition of the tires more than 5 yrs old replace.. Age/condition of the battery , cables , has wiring been hacked fuse block has it been upgraded to blade fuses or is it still glass fuses. (up grade to blade recommended) Carbs will most likely need to be removed and a full strip down and soak you will hear the term "Church of clean" mentioned. Replace all the rubber seals in the carb especially the butterfly seals (Vacuum leak source) to replace you have to break the rack which is way to church. Probably gave you more info ,but you should go to top of the page to xj4ever and go to the info overload hour , you will find a bunch of helpful info good luck.
