I HAVE A 1982 XJ750. IT KEEPS FOULING PLUGS. 1 AND 2 WILL BE BLACK AND 3 WILL BE CLEAN AND 4 HALF CLEAN. I TOOK AND CLEAN THE CARB. AND ALL JETS. THE AIR DAMPER ON 3 WAS NOT CLOSE LIKE THE OTHER 3. SO I ADJUSTED THE LINKAGE. PUT ALL BACK TOGETHER AND NOW IT WILL ONLY RUN WITH THE CHOKE OUT ALITTLE. WILL NOT IDLE. I THINK I NEED TO ADJUST THE FUEL AND RESCH THE VACUUM. WHAT DO YA SUGGEST? DOES THE ALL 4 DAMPER NEED TO BE THE SAME DISTANCE?

    HELP!!!!!

By air damper I assume you mean butterfly. The #3 butterfly is the master. Therefore all the others should be set to it. Yes they should be the same. This is called bench syncing. If it will only run with choke on then either your carbs are not fully clean or your mixture screws are set too lean. I would start with 3 turns out and see how it runs.

    First order of business,
Welcome Wjbreu! Glad you found us.
Second order, Please turn off the caps lock! Sounds like your shouting at us.
    Third order,
As BlueMax pointed out, you need to get all the throttle/butterfly valves syncronized to #3
When you cleaned the carb bodies, did you remove the air/fuel screws by chance? If you have problems like a set of carbs I have, the o-rings in there tend to disintigrate over time. Might well be that yours have done the same and need replacement. Do a site search for Chacal, he carries new stuff for carbs.
Best of luck to you on your efforts and let us know what you find/learn.

Thanks for a great web site. I read differant articles and tried some new things. I cleaned the spark plugs, cleaned vac ports (which were plugged), made the special tool, and adjusted the mixer setting to 1 1/2 turns out. I installed the tool and set the idle . It ran great. Did not have to adjust the mixer or syn. the carb. I took the tool out and readjusted the idle. We had some bad cold mornings, so I have not had a chance to ride. But we have a toy run Sunday, so I will try it out then. Let you know.
    Thanks,

One and a half turns out on a 750 just plain sounds lean.
    Do some Plug Reads.
If the Plugs are CLEAN ... you can add a little bit more on the Pilot Screws.

You need to shoot for Plugs that look a little Brown ... if you can Dial that in.

If the Center Ceramic surrounding the Electrode is eroded or shows signs of tiny hairline fractures ... that's too Lean and you need to add a few Degrees more of Pilot Screws Out.
