Hey guys, found this hanging in my headlight basket, what is it? Where should it hook? I thought it was for the turn signals, but it seems to run back into the harness headed to the back of the bike.

It looks like it's the combined ground for the turn signals missing the protective clear jacket.
To clarify: Does it have two male bullet connectors going into it?
Both black wires into a black wire lead?
If so, that is what it is.

One of the wires does run to the left front signal, the right signal only has one wire. Is this the ground for the right signal? The signals do work.

Both of the front signals usually run to this dual ground connector, in the headlight bucket, but with bikes as old as ours, it's anyones guess. Someone could have changed things for some reason. If you have aftermarket signals that's probably the best reason why it is different.
See the above image. I added it after your last post. Hopefully it will make sense.

The bullet connectors must be gone. Just the spade type connector is left

are there 2 wires connected to the spade type connector? your photo shows a wire behind the ground connector is it connected to it?

and the wire that is not connected is that the wire that goes into the main harness?

I will look at a harness and in a bucket .................

my harness shows one double black ground connector going into the main harness.
the only other black wire of that size i see coming from main harness is connected to the headlight connector with a green and yellow wire

    The guys got this one.

The wire in you hand pulled out of the crimp on the bullet connector that is still in the female end of the ground circuit.
Since the insulative cover is missing, you should invest in new connectors (Chacal should have them if you want the OEM type), a good crimping tool, and rebuild that part of the harness.

do you have the signals mounted to the rubber stays?
each xj550 signal has 2 wires a ground and a hot lead . some 650 and 750 signals are grounded to the case of the bulb holder and through the frame

2 wires coming in and 2 wires going out. One of the 2 going out goes to the left turn signal, the other is the loose wire. The right turn signal is on a different wire color. They all work, can't confirm if the headlight works yet. The wire you pointed out is coming to that connector from the left turn signal.

the wire i labeled 1 hooks to the connector and the wire in your hand loops under your fingers and goes to the same connector but does not connect to anything.
and both your turn signals work .
the black wire from the right turn signal is connected to what color wire?

headlight does not come on untill bike starts or motor spins fast enough to close the relay

Ok, just looked at it closer. There is a green wire hooked to both front turn signals. It's the only wire hooked to the right signal. The left signal has the same color green wire and one of the black wires hooked to it. The 2 green wires come out of a bullet connector in the headlight housing. The headlight is mounted to rubber stays.

You must have a replacement turn signal that is gounded to the frame via the turn signal housing.

Pics of the whole turn signal housing would help I.D. them, but it does appear that you have one that was not originally meant to be on your XJ (the one with the single wire).
