Trying to get an old 1981 XJ550 running. Both coils tested bad. Ordered these coils from ebay that say they fit the XJ but they look different. Anyone have any experience with these or something similar?
For starters they are a bit shorter so they fit into the square hole in the frame. They will bolt up though. Secondly there are no instructions and the wire colors don't match so I'm guessing which wire hooks where. Thirdly, the plug wires are not numbered so I'm guessing which plug wires go to which plug. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, it won't let me put the text link either so here's the main description heading,
NEW IGNITION COIL for GSF1200S BANDIT SUZUKI 1996-2005,GSF400 GSF600 (1995-2004)
The main heading says it's for a Suzuki Bandit and some more but it lists the XJ as compatible. They are reading about 3.9 on the primary and about 12K secondary. I've caught a faint yellow spark very occasionally, but for the most part nothing.

So "too high" as in they won't work and fire the bike? I did manage to get a few weak sparks with these coils on, which is the same problem I'm having with the one original good coil I have.

1 and 4 from first coil 2 and 3 from second coil left to right as you sit on bike

Do I understand right that it doesn't matter which plug wire from the coil you use for 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 since they fire at the same time.? In other words, 1 and 4 fire at the same time, so either wire can go for either plug, 1 or 4.

What about the primary wires? Can they be hooked up backwards or does it not matter?

Theoretically they can be reversed, but in practice, it doesn't really make a difference as far as I know. Most ignition coils do not have a polarity.

backwards but on the correct coils or what you think is coil pack 1 (1 and 4) becomes coil pack 2

both plugs firing on the same coil is called wasted spark ignition

I bought a DB Electrical coil last year for my son's xj550 off of eBay, but it was listed as a direct replacement for oem. It was cheap and we were just troubleshooting. It did not have plug boots on it, and if I recall, it bolted in correctly but was a bit shorter than the original....had to place a rubber spacer in the rubber boot to set it out far enough to meet the hole in the frame. It works fine though, never did get around to putting the original coil back in after we got it running.

Yeah, thats the ones I got. They came with the boots though. They do seem to work, finally got my bike firing with them. Like you said, they are a tad shorter than stock.

I would make sure they are the correct boots. If I recall correctly oem are resistor boots, and those that came with it may not be. If you are still having any issues thread the oem boots on the wires and see if it helps. We ended up tracing his problem down to a bad tci.

or go with resistor plugs then you refresh the resistance every time you replace the plugs

They have resistor boots. Tested at about 5 ohms.

10 k is spec in US. 5k caps are used with 5k resistor plugs.

that works too because it is in the total spec for coil wires
