I went to sturgis in 2009.Thank god i owned a harley then.If I had been on anything else i would have been looked at as some sort of wimp, not a real biker.Stupid but true. I of course now own a 650 maxim and 1100 xs that someday might be running. Are there any yamaha rallies, or at least metric rallies? Anyone ever ride their jap bike to a rally.I am going to go back to sturgis next year.I most likely will trailer whatever I am going to ride around on once i get there. It is 1134 miles from here.I cant ride that far. Most likely if the 11 is running thats what I will be on.I expect to get jeers and even looks of disapproval.Used to there were stardays.I went to one big vjmc rally in indiana, only because one of my daughters lives there. The meeting place was beautiful.I was disappointed in the turnout. We have the international motorcycle show here in dallas.Great display of bikes and one that harley doesnt dominate. I am not bashing harleys.I have owned 2.They are beautiful and sound great. And they are the reason the whole cruiser scene even exists. But that is not my interest now.

There's a group of about 5 of us, all metric bikes, that go to vintage torquefest in Dubuque first weekend of May. There's also a rigid run (hardtailed or strutted bikes only) that we are going to this year, usually in June but I think they moved it to Sept this year.

I made the trip to Daytona Bike Week once. I'm sure I'll be back again one day once memory fades.
It's fun looking at the bikes in the parking lot at every tavern/restaurant you may go to but waiting in line everywhere gets extremely frustrating. Given a week off I'd rather spend it riding somewhere interesting verses posing with the posers.
Although I know little about the vintage Yamaha rally it might be exactly what you're looking for.

If your 11 is running well, the looks of disapproval will be directed at your taillight. That four will walk away from most Neolithic big twins without breaking a sweat!

I, too, have owned 2 Harley’s and my wife still rides her super low sporty. She loves it and I loved the Harley’s myself. Except to the fact that everything under the sun is expensive for them and the upkeep is constant. It seemed my 2016 Harley with less than 4K miles spent more time at the shop for warranty work than it was in my garage. My dad always tells me HD stands for “ hardly drive or for hundred dollars”. All depends on which discussion we were having at the time.
I love the fact that I can learn about these xj’s and more to the point is that it doesn’t break the bank at all. I have spent more $ on my wife’s loud exhaust system for her Harley than I spent on entire running xj’s

Not to say I won’t have another later. I am stoked tho about this xj is world/forum. Everyone here is great and is happy to pass on knowledge

If it’s Dubuque Iowa. I’m in!

A buddy rode his 1982 Honda CD500 to Sturgis with two HD-based buddies. They all had a great time. I'll be taking my V Star 1300 there for 2018. Your experience will depend a lot of who you ride with and why you're going.

It is Dubuque Iowa! May 4th and 5th. In our group of friends there is two xs650's, and xs400, two xj650's, an xs1100, a cb750, and possibly an xv750 if he shows up. There are quite a few bikes there. Some really old ones, some newer, most custom of some sort or another, and a lot of old hot rods. They do a vintage stock car race on the dirt track since the event takes place at the Dubuque county fairgrounds.

Hey! We're having the biggest vintage Yamaha rally in North America at the end of September. We expect over 100 bikes. It's a great place to come and be with your own kind. We look at Harleys with disdain. There is a thread on here in the rally section. www.vintageyamaharally.com Not many beds remain.

Do you have some vacation time? We are the weekend before the Barber Vintage Fest. There, you will find 70,000 motorcycle enthusiasts with Harley Davidson in the minority. It's only 200 miles and four days between these events.

@Stumplifter we got there a little late and missed some of the heat races, but aside from the very odd intermission the racing was pretty neat to see. It wasn't as long of a program as I thought it'd be, but then again we did get there late. For the size of the track and the surface, the expert and vintage classes were really hauling the mail with some very tight racing.
