My bike was torn down.emphasis on torn by the previous owner. He only gave me one cam.Intake.I have 2 good ones coming from ebay.In my manual the position and alignment sems to be mandatory, as always. But so far i havent found timing marks to line up.I know about rotating the crank to line up 2 marks there. But the manual talks about a mark on the center cam bearing cap and lining up with a mark on the cam.I see niether mark. The hex part to turn the cam looks to be helpful.Facing the rear of the engine, with number 1 on the left outermost side, the cam sprocket bolt should face out toward the left, with hex side towards the right correct? But I dont see timing marks.I know if they arent lined up it will never be in time. The same goes with the exhaust cam I am sure.Input appreciated. If the cams hadnt been in a bucket, and both of them had been there, it would have helped. Also one of the buckets fell out.It just simply does not want to fall back into its hole.I didnt know if tapping on it with a rubber hammer to make it drop down would ruin it.Thanks for your help.

I found the mark on the cam.tiny little circle. And the arrow on the center cam cap.Loks like use the hex to hold the cam in position while the caps are being snugged. The intake cam cap says I 1,the one on # 4 says I 18,or 8.Hard to read.I thought it would say i 4. Same on exhaust side.ex1 and on number 4 looks like ex 8 or 18. I thought it would be left to right 1-4.The caps fit perfect, the dowels work good. That hex part will come in handy. The last cam I messed with was installing a cam chain on a 79 ltd.Way different. But clearly on that were marks easily seen.I see them now.Not sure about the numbers on the caps.

Do yourself a favour and fit and mark the caps without the cam, check alignment of each bearing surface carefully, then mark or note the marks.
As for timing the cams, you don't need any maks to get close, see my earlier post. Once near the required setting the marks should become obvious.
Dont go tapping any followers in any houusings, if it doesn't fit check why, quite possible it just needs squaring up.
Also, I would shim up the valve clearances before timing the cams, just in caseit causes clearance issues (unlikely).
Please note, all this is without xj experience, it's just normal ohc building info.

yes.the marks did become obvious. Those buckets, some fell out when I turned the head over when it came in the mail.some just fell right back in.Others i fiddled with forever then suddenly one would fall back in.they have to be comig down the hole perfectly then they do just drop in.Once i saw the mark on the intake cam and the mark on the cam caps I thought duh.its obvious. Thanks for you input.

Other advice I feel at least semi quallified to give - check and lap in all the valves, then shim the followers, don't shim them without doing the valves - it's apart on the bench, this is the time to do it.
