I just rebuilt my carbs including throttle shaft seals and still having a high idle issue. My boots look good, and I'm wondering how far open the butterfly's are supposed to be at idle? I have mine open just enough to stick a needle on the underside.

I would say that is a good starting point, I have used the setting before and worked well for me. I am sure there will be a few more coming along to give more advice. There might even be a setting in the "church of clean" that others have used, but your setting should be a good start.

Thanks! I just wanted to rule out my butterfly setting.

As in how high? Did you back off the idle screw adjustment located at the back of the carbs to try and bring it down?

I like to use the transfer ports in the carb throat to bench sync:

Yes the idle screw is all the way out. Thanks for the pics! So should I verify my butterflys are similar to pic #1 at idle?

Yes, pic 1 is a good starting point to verify the throttle plates will fully close, and you should be able to get there on all four using the idle / sync screws. Once confirmed, set them evenly so that approximately 1/2 of the hole is visible on each carb.
