Hi, new XJ owner here. Bought an 82 xj650 maxim a few weeks ago, and have been having some issues. First off, it seems that if the rpm's get too low, it has a tendency to want to die, so I adjusted the fuel screw to keep rpm's around 2000. I'll start her up and let her warm up for 5 to 10 minutes. I'll pull away, and even though she's real warmed up, still rides with hesitation as if the engine is still cold. Will ride her around, and usually after about 5-10 minutes or so, eventually (usually when at a light/stop sign) the rpms will drop and she dies. I'll start her back up, but as soon as I give some throttle, will die once more.

Read some forums and was lead to believe it was a carb issue, likely clogged jets or something. So I did a carb rebuild, although to be honest the carb was clean as a whistle already, so I'm not sure the rebuild was even necessary. Put the carb back on and still having the same problem. What should be my next course of action?

    Thanks!

    -Sam

Valves were checked for proper clearance?

    Running carb sync done?

Float levels verified by the wet method?

    Ignition coiled ohmed out?

These bikes should sound like a sewing machine at 1050rpms.

Great, these are all places to start. Will follow up once I complete these tests.

spec for rpms is 1050 set it a little higher 1100 at 2000 rpm you are pulling fuel from main jets.
if doing the things suggested above does not work you may want to check forclogged pilot jet passages and jets.
check output voltages of charging system.
