    Safety items first:
    Brake lines - how old?
    Brake shoes - worn?
    Tires - date code?

You don't want to get going only to find you can't stop, or have a sudden, unexpected stop!

Someone will be along with the information overload hour, but outside of tyres and brakes the frame around the sidestand area is worth a poke at apparently.

Hey welcome aboard as cgutz stated safety first if brake hoses are original recommend upgrading to braided stainless hoses xj4ever has them it is a great upgrade. While replacing brake hoses recommend overhauling the calipers replacing the seals and brake pads and shoes while at front end make sure fork seals are not leaking a leaking seal can drip onto brakes not real cool and if you pull wheel perfect time to pull forks if you have to replace seals. Check the battery how old? Is it fully charged and if it is a lead acid battery services to full with distilled water? Ensure all the lights work , I don't recall if the xj900 has fuse block under the seat or if it is mounted under the cluster. If it is under the seat has it been upgraded to blade type fuses? If not upgrade recommended . Just a few thoughts keep us informed of your progress . On the upper right corner of the page click on xj4ever he goes by chacal his service is great and he ships to the UK Cheers

Cheers for the reply guys ,

The bike already has braided lines and the tyres are a couple years old , pads front and rear are good and has full mot history since the beginning of time lol,

It says in the manual sae standard oils , on all my previous bikes I've always used specific motorcycle oil from the likes of Castrol ect, this bike it a bit older mind but still has wet clutch so what oil would you recommnd ?

Castrol 10w40 or 20w50 motorcycle oil if fine do not use full synthetic it can cause clutch slippage and starter clutch problems on these bikes . Member kmoe has a thread about oil some folks run diesel oil 15w40 hope this helps. Shell Rotella is another oil but not sure if this available in UK sure you have comparable oils .
