    Hi
I have just bought myself a 1985 xj700 maxim. I do not know much about motorbikes or mechanics .... yet!
I'm hoping I can get help from you guys with the stuff I want to do with the bike as I'm keen to learn.
My first job is that I need to replace the entire exhaust system as it is very shabby. I have been looking online and have seen a Mac 4 into 2 system. However, my bike has a 'plate' that converts the 4 pipes into 2 and the exhausts I have seen for sale pretty much come as 2 sections without the 'plate'.
    Would this fit?

    Matt,
    Welcome onboard!

The "Plate" is called the collector for the exhaust. As you mentioned it has the 4 downpipes from the cylinder head going into it, and the 2 exits for the dual mufflers.

    A couple of questions:
Did you get the air-cooled or water cooled model?
    Where is Bournemouth?

    Tony
