Hi! New member in Texas.

    Hi to everyone out there! I just joined here a couple of days ago. I hadn't ridden a bike since 1979 when I wrecked my 650 Yamaha. I just purchased a XJ750 Seca from a neighbor. I have ridden it and it seems to run pretty well. It needs cables because they were cut up and sticky. Trying to fix it up you know?
    I live in Irving Texas and was wondering if there were any Seca owners close to me that would be willing to look at it and give me some ideas?

    Welcome to you Brown! New cables ought to run you under $100 (OEM), with aftermarket being about half that. I do hope our Texas brethern will look in on you. Best of luck with the new wheels!

    I am about 5 hours south east of you, but I do know we have a few members in the DFW metroplex!

    In the meantime do you have any pictures of your 750 seca?
    Quite a bit of help can be assesed by the keen eyes in this forum.

    The cables can be purchased at the local Stealership! Those NEED to be replaced if they are in the condish you say they are in currently.

    You DID say that it is running right, then the hard parts are out of the way ;)

    Hey Brown, welcome to the site. Cables are fairly cheap and you can get them at just about any motorcycle shop or dealership regardless of brand, all they have to do is order them out of the aftermarket parts catalog like Parts Unlimited or Tucker Rocky. I just bought a throttle cable at Grapevine Kawasaki for my XJ750 Seca for 12 bucks. It took a couple of days for the part to come in once i ordered it but i don't expect the local Kawi dealer to have my Yammie parts for a 25 year old bike. Your local Cycle Gear can order parts too, nice store for gear if you need any. I ride my new Ninja that i just bought this spring from Kawasaki City in Irving so i get over your way from time to time when the bike needs it's service. Let me know if you need anything and i'd be glad to help out if i can. Always nice to see another XJ on the road.

    Thanks to everyone for your help! I already replaced the choke cable. The original problem the guy I got it from said was the fact that it would run wide open sometimes. When I replaced the choke cable I found that the throttle cable was run around the front of the bike and down under the left side of the gas tank. When you made rt. turns it would open up! Almost put me thru a brick wall! I don't know if somone rerouted the cables, no manual, or what. All the cables ran thru the same place uner the tanh and had chaffing on them. Also, the bolt in the oil filter has the head stripped bad and I haven't gotten it out yet. I may contact one of you guys close by and see if you can stop by sometime and give me some advice.

    Those two spots don't have the look of a ready-to-fail cable. You could trim off the high spots and do a nice taping-over them and them lube them before you reroute them over the Gas Tank Rubber Stay.

    If you have the cash for new Cables ... by all means ... treat yourself to some new ones. But if the sheaths are the only problem and the cables move without hanging up ... a tape-job and a few drops of oil will get you right back in business.

    Even though the Bike didn't come with them ... you might want to get some Plastic Tie-Wraps and "Dress-up" and "Anchor" the cables from moving about.

    Especially the Throttle Cable if it was pulling and making the bike rev-up without you opening the throttle.

    Whatever you decide to do ... have a little fun with it. "Tis the Season for gift buying. Maybe buying a pair of new Cables for yourself will make you feel better.

    Keep them two around for spares if that's what you decide to do.

    I had the same problem with the '82 I bought for my wife. It turned out to be an improperly routed throttle cable.

    ...And you're right. Turning the handle bar all the way to the right and having the engine race up to 5 or 6000 Rpm is pretty scary! 8O

Check it out. There's a tech day in Mansfield tomorrow.
