Why do the transmission bearings only have half rings to locate them, when the ring groove is completly around the bearing, and on both halves of the case? .... or am I missing 2 half rings?

I think they are Thrust Washers; not bearings actually. What does the Parts Site Call them? Let's see.

If they are the two on either side of the Middle Gear, they are only 1/2 on each side. You aren't missing the other sides. Those are Thrust Washers and the site calls them "Clips".

Good question.. but all Yamas use(d?) the half rings for bearing locators. Has worked Fine.. so far

25-Years and still running on the two XJ-Bikes I have in my stable.

The totally de-blacked and de-gold plated former 750 Midnight Maxim and the Seca-900. Both running good and fun a plenty.

The Max was so much fun to ride I didn't take the 900 out much all season!

Re: Transmission (please have a look Rick)

You can see the wear on the gear teeth in this photo ... to me (humble opinion) that still looks good to go. The engine has 60,000km on it, but this just looks like a few cases of "can't find em' - grind em'. I'm thinking still lots of miles on these. What do you guys think?[IMG]

Amigo, I could give you a much better opinion if the photo were in focus. Right off hand I would say you are in good shape, but I will with hold that judgement until we see better pictures.
