Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone knew what the handle bar diameter is on an 82 maxim xj650? Is it 7/8’s. I was looking at the European Style Sport bar at Old Bike Barn and thought it would be a good fit. I was also reading some other posts and saw others were having troubles with tank clearance and had to modify the stops on their head tube. Does anyone see any potential problems with these bars.

    Thanks-

yeah its 7/8ths never tried the euro sport bar but they are very similar to the GP touring Bars that i use. heres a pic of what it looks like. i have a mega fat gas tank too and i just BARELY dont hit my tank. we're talking like by 3mm or so.

Thanks man! I was also looking into some new grips, something similar to yours. But I was wondering what to do because they are the foam ones that are glued on. Would I need to buy a new throttle or just cut the foam grips off with a razor blade. Any info would be helpful. Thanks again.

you can try compressed air under the throttle grip first and see if you cant pop em off the throttle. if that doesnt work then yeah just cut them off. with a razor blade.

my right side grip just pulls off but i personally wouldnt be able to get my throttle grip off without cutting it.

btw im going to be switching to rubber grips soon. im making my bike a bit more aggressive and less comfort but if you are looking for less vibration and long riding comfort then foam would be good choice. but ill warn you with this (something ive noticed) in cold weather when i wear my big leather guantlets foam doesnt have nearly as much grip to it. so you kinda feel like you can slip your hands on the foam. just a heads up. but overall its not too bad.

You will probably have to get new holders for the mirrors as well, or some sort of mirror extensions. The stock version is angled to accommodate the stock high handlebars.

A PO had put some Seca lower profile bars on my Maxim. It just didn't work. A couple of days ago I put the stock bars back on - suddenly I have full coverage with my mirrors. YAY! And the bike LOOKS a LOT better now, as the curves of the bars match the contours of the bike. Plus, it seems more comfortable and natural when riding.

Yamaha knew what they were doing when the designed the bars for the Maxim.

Hey, I'd like your stock bars. I'd like to get a set for my organ donor (which may be put on the road one day). There's a set on it similar to your post (except black) you can have.
