Just installed carbs and once it warmed up enough, adjusted choke from full on to off incrementally until it ran good...then WAY too good as it climbed rapidly to 6 or 7k rpm. I immediately shut it off. I tried to adjust the idle all the way down, but it made no differenc as still would hit 7k rpm immediately upon start up. What next???
Of course, I wonder if I need to install the airbox w/filter and then install boots for air tight flow only threw a restrictive filter...?
By the way, This parts bike, Xj750j is the test bed for my xj750K restoration bike that I got from too many bikes in Canada. Carbs were included but not installed given the xj750K was missing the head. I’ll probably drop this 82 engine in if I can manage to NOT blow it up while testing the carb.

The carbs are probably way out of balance. Balance them visually and should be able to get the idle down and do a running balance. Backing out the idle set screw should lower the idle speed.

You installed a set of carbs without stripping at least the float bowls and tops off? And as has been suggested bench balanced them?
    Really?

Probably an air leak somewhere, check around the boots between carb/engine.
