Hi all - this may be a daft question, but I gotta ask it to keep my mind at ease :)
Ok... I’m in the middle of restoring an Xj900f (‘94)... it had a vgc Jama stainless exhaust... however the twin collets on each of the down pipes are perished and will need replacing.
Ok, so here’s the question: when I put it all back together (with new flange gaskets of course), do I really need to use the collets? Exactly what is their purpose? If your replies suggest they are a necessity, can anyone recommend a good source?
    Thanks in advance
Ps - will try to upload a few pics too...

Without them the flange May bottom out against the head and may not seal the exhaust.

Ah yes, upon closer inspection I can see how the collets will help to keep the pipe central to the flange / manifold port. Thank you

Now as for your need for new ones may other makers have similar parts. One that come to mind is 85-89 zx750 uses ones that I’ll bet will fit.
