Gear Lever Post Removal

    Hi, trying to tighten up gear change slack got new gear lever but it wobbles on post attached to side cover was wondering how to remove the gear lever post from xj 650 4k0
    (See pictures)
    Looked at part held by circlip and o ring, must tap back realease circlip tap the opposite way, job Done!,
    Nooe! tried gentle tap, harder tap, thump, jaws of vice , won't budge, there must be a trick to this please help

    Also picture of clutch steel plates, ooohhh!

    Don't remove the post. Have the lever bored, and a bronze bushing fitted.

    It will not solve my issue, The lever is brand new NOS.
    It's the post that is worn, so needs replacing.

    Well, heat and care then. Your thoughts about the method of removal are correct, but it's been in there for 30+ years.


    If you have access to a press, that would be better than trying to tap it out, just be sure to support the cover very well so it does not bend or crack.


    Addendum: heat, candle wax (paraffin), and care. The steel has likely become one with the aluminum case, so a good penetrant will be needed for it to free up.
    It may be necessary to have a machinist remove it.

    I think you're peeing in the wind here, measure up the unworn bit on the shaft to see how much its worn before removing it. If it's substantial then yes push it out and make a new one. You might find the lever is just made a bit sloppy, it's something I've noticed on a few of the controls on my 650s.
