I have never heard of a 50cc Midnight Maxim. Is this a joke?

I don't think it's a "Maxim" ... I think its a 50cc Model wearing a Midnight Paint scheme.

 

I think I know what this is now. After a bit of searching I think it is an RX50. Still can't find anything on the "midnight" paint job. I think you are right, this may be a custom paint scheme.

Look at the picture. There is no shadow from the motorcycle, on a sunny day..., so the photo has already been doctored. Or at least that is my initial impression of it.

It's even more obvious once you look at the tires. I've seen worse photoshops, but still...

 

the photo in the ad is not a photo of the actual bike....

 

I remember them from when I was in high school, I think its called a 50 special. pretty sure it wasnt a maxim.
