Xj650 Maxim carb Swap? Yay or Nay?

Hello! Been signed up for a while but my first post.

My '81 xj has a set of standard hitachi carbs that are probably about due a rebuild, I've been looking around for info on carb swaps but cant find a great deal with actual results.

My goal is a little more "go" but more i enjoy faffing around. And as parts here such as jets are non existent for hitachis here in the UK, mikunis or keihin racks are common.

Carb swaps won't make the engine "go" any better than it already does. Horsepower increases aren't that simple.

You can swap in anything you want as long as you can make manifolds to suit. Just keep the fueling requirements of the engine in mind when selecting throat diameter and jetting.

You might have to call to order anything but standard sizes though.

 

You could fit a set of mikunis from a 600, but be warned you'll need to machine down the manifold end to fit the 650 rubbers. Then the std boots wont fit, I can't say if 600 boots and airbox will though. just don't be tempted by cheap chinese pods, they invariably don't work well, and they certainly don't filter well.
If the Hitachi diapgragms are good I would recommend sticking with them, they're well made bits of kit imo.

 

I have a xj750 D model and it was fi originally now running fazer 600 gen 1 carbs po did it runs as it should and gets 170 mile to tank as so carb surgery is possible all watedw to add best of luck if not already successful done
