I am doing fork seals on my 83 XJ900 and cannot get the damper rod to go in far enough so it protrudes enough through the top tube so the retaining bolt can reach it. It seems to be getting hung up on some weird retaining ring at the the bottom of the top tube. I have been unable to separate the other fork yet to compare (damper bolt is spinning and yes, I have tried heat and the broom handle, will try the air impact wrench tomorrow). What is the this retainer for and did mine somehow get displaced so the damper doesn't go through all the way. I have verified with the diagram in the manual that I am assembling them in the correct order.

Assuming we are looking at the bottom of the top tube, appears so as I can se the split sliding bushing, the ring around that rod is offset in the picture, and needs to be centered, also some of the spacers etc are tapered and can be installed upside down in some cases, something is upside down or off center causing the issue.
Also it appears there are a few split rings in the bottom, they can go wonky and overlap causing the same issue.
    Hope this helps

Well... umm. I looked at the diagram but apparently was misreading it. I was installing the taper spindle and washers on the damper rod before I put the damper rod in the top tube. Finally got my other fork tube apart- had to drill the damper rod bolt out. Have both reassembled and back in the bike. Thanks for the encouragement! This is what it looks like before I put the tube back. IMG_3672.jpg

I am the registrar for the "XJ900RK Seca Database for USA-Delivered Units".

It is a log of those that are still in existence. It's by no means comprehensive, but it is a private record of those that people have submitted info to me about. So far, there are slightly over 100 bikes currently logged. That's out of the approx. 1200-1500 believed to have been shipped to the USA.
