I think he just plans to pull the good parts off.... all three parts--- lol!!! I got the rack to pull any useable parts--- but it was SO bad, it became a challenge to myself to see that if it came apart without breaking anything.."could I actually revive THIS rack". So, that is what I'm trying. As long as thing keep coming apart correctly, and things don't get broken, I'll keep going on it.

All the mixture screws are out, all parts ready to finally start being cleaned. I'm SO glad the plugs were still in-- I think the mixture screws would have been the death of these, otherwise.
    Like the bowls?!?! Lol

So at the end of today, things look much better.... some parts will get replaced, but it's looking much more promising. I actually see the bottoms of the bowls!! They're not done yet, but they're a whole lot closer....

wow those are beautiful - I wish I didn't hate polishing aluminum (or just polishing in general) so much.....I'd rather do almost anything else to the bike other than polish it

XJ550H those carburettors are awesome what a restoration by Hogfiddles. Should be the Church of the Clinically Clean they are so spotless. Brilliant work. If he restored my carburettors I would want him to do the rest of the bike to the same standard lol.

Bowls are almost done...still a little goo in the crevices. Otherwise, coming along--- the enricher wells are all still clogged. On the bright side, 3 of the 4 bowl drain screws came out!

Quick update.... carbs and bowls are cleaned of all stuff I could remove but a heavy white layer remains on everything and can’t get it all off. I just sent this rack and another rack out for vaporblasting. I should get them back in about 2 weeks.

I found a guy about 1.5 hrs away, who advertised the service, so basically I’m trying him out to see if he’s as good as he seems to be. We shall see.

It’s basically sodablasting but the baking soda is carried in water rather than air. That adds a layer of buffering/lubricity rather than direct abrasion

Well, similar........I’m not going with the “Replating of every single part” thing on this rack, but I have plenty of “near new” that are going to go on. It’s gonna look pretty darn close to it, but it won’t blind you........I’ll decide later on whether I want to get new caps from Len or see if any of mine are gonna be good enough. I’ll probably go with one from Len by that time.lol

They look really nice Dave. I would never have thought it, even knowing how nice your normal level of work is. And after seeing the bodies with the white powder residue on them I would have thought them to be scrap. Well, done Sir!

Funny— I couldn’t get that white powder to cone off too well. For him, he said that came of incredibly easy.....it was the dark oxidation under the white powder that was tougher..... lol

I’ve used pretty much all the original butterfly shaft/linkages.... I swapped out part of number three. Other than that, I’ve only swapped out a bunch of the rail screws, so far. I will need to replace the enrichment rod And the hats when I get to the top half.

Some more of the story of these carbs. I bought the bike as a parts bike a couple of years ago and just finally continued some of the tear down. The frame was rusted and so the top portion was removed with an angle grinder. Attached are some photos of the just removed lower portion. I also just got the sump off the engine. It looks similar to the carbs that Dave has been working up. We have come to the conclusion that this XJ650RJ must have been a flood bike. Some of the bits and pieces are still viable if someone is willing to pay shipping. The transmission gears look good, not rusty, turn freely for example. The engine block itself is 1 piece, no moving parts.

The frame on the 82' Maxim I have is pretty rough like that, But the motor was cherry all except oxidation on the exterior. That's why I made it a parts bike and it basically merged with the Seca I ride. Would you call that a "Sexim"? Just curious.
