1982 XJ750 Maxim carburetors installation

    Requesting some guidance installing the carburetors on a 1982 XJ750 Maxim.

    When I move the bank of carbs into place I'm reversing the removal process so I'm trying to fit the bank into the boots on the air box first. When doing some it's a big fight to get the boots over the top of the intakes on the carburetors. Are there any suggestions on how to go about installing them.

    The boots are supple and in good shape.

    Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    start by pushing air box boots into box or undoing box bolts to move it back a little.

    grease up the front of carbs with a silicon paste grease . I roll carbs in from left to right

    The only difference being that I roll the carbs up and forward to get them into the intake boots, using a hardwood dowel to lever against the carbs, with the far end of the dowel set in front of the starter. It takes barely any pressure and the carbs pop right in.

    I usually install them right to left, prying as k-moe said against starter to pop in the last carb, then install air box.

    And a heatgun or hairdryer to warm the boots so they're soft helps a lot too

    I rock the carb rack vertically and angled left to right and they pop in one by one... but not before yelling a lot of obscenities and cracking the bourbon. Especially when I took them out for the fourth time in two days because the bench bowl height never seems to agree with the bike bowl height.

    Looking at your pics-- I notice you have not aligned the ring clamps. They must be set so the screw is at the bottom and the wings are straight and on top. If you don't have the wings up on top, the carbs won't go in because the wings will be in the way

    The fuel heights on the bike will be different beause the carbs don't sit level when on the bike (and the ground the bike is on isn't necessarily level).
    Bench is the standard for setting the levels, because that's the way they were set up by Hitachi to begin with. It is a repeatable standard worldwide.

    When checking levels on the bike I have the tube set along the center line (front to back) of the float bowl, which gets you close to where the level would be if the carbs were on the bench. Even then it's only a rough check.
