    Hello XJers,
I recently found a right side cover for my 82 xj750 Seca. Unfortunately it is stock red and my bike is black. First, what is the correct original black paint and where can I find it? Second, what kind of prep is required to remove or cover the red before repainting black? Finding a mint right cover is next to impossible, so I jumped at it even though it is red, now just need to match up the color. Thanks in advance for any help... Respectfully, Timothy

There maybe someone out there that might swap you a red for a black.

If the cover has the emblem remove it from cover, once removed lightly sand with 320 grit sand paper with plenty of water , if cover has the stripe , try to peel it off a hair dryer helps. I use a filler primer ( Walmart Carrie's this in automotive section) put a coat on cover let dry. Krylon glossy black will come close to matching , use a tack cloth on cover, put paint can in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes shake can up . Spray the cover with an even motion with light coverage , the heated can will cause the paint to flow and will give a nice finish .

So is that what you are referring to in the second photo? Is that supposed to be a rubber piece that appears to be cut down?

No, it's a barb-shaped point that is missing.

My right side cover pin broke off too. I ended up drilling it out and filing a wooden dowel to a similar shape and then hot gluing/ gorilla glue to hold it in. Works great
