I was going fulltilt in a hurry with my 81 xj 650.But i had too many projects and was hurrying things along.I now have a modern boring daily rider so i can slow down and do the xj right. Then the boring v twin will go.I will have probably $3000 in my 81 when its done, but its still cheaper than a roadglide. The only reason I didnt dump the whole idea is for a few good reasons.I have owned several ujms, especially kz and cbs. But this forum , xh4ever len chacal whatever his name is makes restoring and repairing these bikes so much easier, and lastly I grew up in the era when the cb was invented followed close behind by the mighty zed. I also owned 2 gs 850 and 1 gs 1000.I did not know a maxim even existed. Anyhow, after all that I have a couple questions.I have gone to some lengths to keep the bike original. The chrome fenders, soon to have original signal lights installed, and for now the hideous buckhorn handlebars. The unusual cant of the master cylinder makes diferent handlebars difficult to work with the slant of the mc.I aint no purist so the buckhorns are going. I had bought a brand new brake mastercylinder for an 86 yamaha venture I used to own, never installed it.I bought all the rebuild parts for the mastercylinder and front caliper rebuild from chacal. But the venture mc would allow for a multitude of different bars.I dont know if the wiring and cables would work.if it does, would the piston and mc chamber have too much or too little fluid pressure for the xj? I was also wondering what others are doing to prevent the mc being slanted too much when using different bars. last question, I have the 81 runner and the 82 parts bike. The 82 seat is in great original condition. But for some reason it dosnt fit into the various slots on the 81 bike. The original 81 seat is all there, but the former owner had cut it way down, much thinner. For my short legs thats ok, but doesnt look original.I will probably go with that unless someone can say why the 82 seat doesnt fitquite right. lastly, I have a complete set of original exhausts and mufflers, but with a few places rusted through. The original setup is way heavy. There are tons of aftermarket options. But is there a good way to repair or replace the rusted out chrome places on the original megaphones? Thanks for any input.

What I'm doing is to replace parts with what is available so the bike stays a runner, and collect good examples of original parts so I can restore it once I have everything that I need.

I am doing that pretty much, but i doubt there are any original mufflers available that arent in bad shape.I will have to go aftermarket probably.

Yes they are expensive. I saw an exhaust system for my XJ 900f a Laser Jama 4 into 2 system. They wanted £750.00 so I will just keep the Motad on it.

Theres couple of places in UK/Europe who do 'pattern' aftermarket exhaust, i priced one set of silencers/mufflers up, for the XJ750.....before i found an almost mint set, complete with workable collector...because they'd been sprayed black at some point, and miraculously the crappy black HT paint HAD protected the chrome!!......they worked out ( the aftermarket kit) at about 300-340 dollars.....plus shipping, which was about the 65 dollar range....so not TOO bad, if you are desperate to keep it original.....I'll try to find the links and post them.....this WAS a while ago, and did take me quite a lot of searching.....but until I found the Ebay replacements, I WAS about to pull the plug....they looked 99.9% like the original Yamaha Seca silencers.....

I managed to get a Motad 4 into 1 when the company folded but I would like a four into two system if I can get a used one, new ones are extortionate.
