Hello everyone, been lurking for awhile now first time posting. I'm not new to bikes but new to the XJ's. I am a autotech by day and an machine/engine builder by night. (No I don't sleep. No time for that.Lol) Anyways I got a 1981 Xj750r Seca from a good friend of mine that bought it in 81. Rode it mainly on the highway commuting till 1999. Been in a shed ever since. I took ownership, evicted the mice condominiums, cleaned the carbs, changed the oil and ran a clean fuel supply from a boat tank. She started right up and sounded good! Bike was stored with a full tank and clean oil.

My question is at 23k miles what would you do to the engine? I plan on checking the valves but in the back of my mind I think of the dreaded primary chain guide. Of course as a engine builder with a full machine shop at my disposal I am trying to not think of that as I know there is no way possible I would stop there.lol. So check the valves and run it?

Just so you have an idea where I'm going with this bike so far rims are refinished, forks rebuilt , carbs rebuilt/rejected and frame is on it way to powdercoating.

Sorry for the long post. I have learned so much so far from this forum and Len has been great for parts so I felt I had to donate.

Thanks for any and all help!

It looks like maintenance was good through its life. I would run as is and enjoy the blast. Haven’t had to do a chain guide replacement yet and my xj650rjc has 50,000 kilometres on it.

Unless starter clutch is slipping badly , I would adjust valves, and check compression if this reads good , ride :D My seca starter clutch slips when really hot , at some point I will have to tear into engine . I bought another engine off fellow forum member Joe Elif this engine had 38000k , checked compression was around 130psi , so might swap it in and fix stater clutch on my present engine . You have an advantage as looks like bike was cared for , the PO of mine was in pretty good shape and had not been hacked .

Thanks guys! That's sounds like a plan. I agree being cared for is helping me big time. I didn't even find dirty fork oil. As far as work done I know it had tires and a pair of factory mufflers in the early 90's but that about it other then normal maintenance.

My friend is a huge BMW car guy so he knows all about maintenance. Lol
