I am replacing the battery in my 1982 Seca. I removed the old one, connected the positive terminal to the new battery and when attempting to connect the negative terminal the bike tries to start? No key in the ignition or anything like that. What am I doing wrong????

Sounds like the starter solenoid may be stuck?

Disconnect the small wire lead off the solenoid to see if that prevents it from cranking over.
If it still does I would replace the solenoid and retest it.

If it stops cranking over with the lead disconnected, you need to check all the circuits for the starter switch for a short to ground.
Could be a stuck starter switch too?

Check those things and let us know what you find.

I actually tapped the solenoid a couple times with the back end of my screwdriver and it worked. Possible it was stuck? Would you suggest I replace it, or does this happen from the surge of a new fully charged battery? Thanks for your reply!!!!

Older bikes have various electrical gremlins. You just found one, and I would get a replacement.
