Has anyone tried the $84.00 shocks from JC Whitney?
I think I have at least 1 of my shocks bad.
And I can't see paying 2,,3,,4 hundred dollars for a set of shocks.
Some of the shocks I've seen without the springs are more than I want to pay. I can put 4 shocks on my truck for $84.00, whats so special about bike skocks?
I'don't want to buy used cause you don't know what your getting.
I've heard of people buying harley take-offs and using them. But I'm not sure what all that involves.
If anyone has tried them (jc whitney) let me know what you think.
I might just get a set anyway, they have to be better than what I have.
    Thanks for listening. :)

I recall someone on the old XJowners site that picked up a pair of these shocks and he said they were 1000 times better than the old originals. Tighten up the rear a lot. But also expect the front to feel very under compressed do to the new rear shocks. May want to look into getting a pair of Progressive front fork springs to solve the soft front end. They sell for $50 at http://www.mawonline.com/ .

Thanks CT; I just built my forks a couple months ago, and was going to put new springs in then but funds would not allow. But it's on my list. I found them(the shocks) for $75.00 at partsnmore.com + free shipping(I'm not affilliated)

The ones on my bike now are chrome, and thats what I would have prefered, but I'll take the black and chrome for that price. And for a better ride. I notice the bad shock most when, (as woot would put it)" I get in the twisties". :)

lol - in the twisties you don't want to be riding a pogo stick... ;) tell us what you think of these ones

The one think I'd like to have additionally would be some damping control... These new shocks will have to be better than the 20+ year old stockers.

I recieved my new shocks at work this morning, and had them on about 45 minutes later. Went for a ride at lunch :D much improvement. I didn't get to ride much on them, but so far they feel alot better. Only problem is I can't get my 1 1/2 inch sag when I sit on the bike. I have them set to the weakest setting and my skinny little rearend will not drop the bike but about a 1/2 inch.
Strangest thing happened at lunch. I rode down to a park I sometimes go to eat lunch. So I'm parked under this tree setting on the ground, eating my lunch. And this bike pulls in the park, and I look and it looks just like my bike. 8O  . Well the guy makes the round threw the park and as he approches he see's me and comes over. He says I thought I had the only one of these around, and I told him he may have had until I imported mine from Ohio.
Anyway he has a 81 650 maxim and it looks just like mine. I told him of this site but he's not into computers. Anyway, we exchanged phone numbers so we could get together for a ride. It's a small world.

Looks great! Don't worry about the sag, it will show up sooner than you want it to!

Is it me or does that picture need to be rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise? 8O :?:

mawonline - man, I think that's where I got my dunlop tires in the past. Thanks for the reminder. I've lost that bookmark and couldn't remember the name. I'll throw it into the Links section

Well - how does the bike feel? :)

All sag is trying to do is give you the longest range of movement in the shock without topping out... as the shock is brand new and you are smaller than us then perhaps it is a little bit harder than it needs to be... throw some luggage on and go for a long ride! :)

It feels much stiffer. Not having rode before this bike I'm not sure exactly what it's supposed to feel like. It doesn't squat like it did before and feels quite stiff, is this good? What sort of difference should I exspect? Is there something I can do to see if they are responding correctly?

    JDRich-
How about an update on your aftermarket shcoks? I'm about to replace those on my '82 XJ750 Max, and don't want to spend $200+ for shocks-
    Thanks

Speaking as a new rider with no experience riding other bikes, I really can't give you much information. I do know they fell much better when I'm cornering. I haven't put that many miles on them yet. They are still quite stiff. Overall I have to say it's a better ride.
Sorry I can't give a more detailed report.
I would say they were worth the $75.00
