I have purchased a valve cover gasket for my '82 750. The guy at the shop suggested to replace the bolt gaskets also. Is there any need for this ? I have not opened the engine yet to see what he is talking about, just getting info. in advance.

The 8 outboard bolts don't tighten against the cover, they have a shoulder on them that contacts the head. Up by the head of the bolt there is a rubber piece, as this compresses it holds the cover down tight. Essentially it acts like a seal and a spring.

With age those pieces loose their elasticity which can prevent them from holding the cover tight enough.

You can get the bolt gaskets on ebay. If yours are dry and cracked you will need to replace them like MiCarl says. If they aren't tight enough to prevent leaking you may be able to get a few more years out of them by putting a washer on the bolt underneath the head to provide some more compression. I used some C clips to do that temporarily but eventually they will have to be replaced. Don't tighten down the bolts too much or you will strip the threads in the head. When the collar on the bolt hits bottom you are done tightening.
