Hi all, now that I have gotten my bike (82 750 maxim) mechanically sound for the great riding wheather have been working on the cosmetics of the 'ole girl and have run in to a slight issue with some motor parts. Mostly the side covers and trans. area. I wanted to buff these out with some great metal polish I came across that did wonders on my fenders but noticed a great deal of the covers were staying dull, after some investigation found that they have a protective coating over them. Even using my buffer and polish it is taking a great deal of effort to remove the coating, the parts that I have gotten thru look fantastic, only to be surrounded by the dull look of the still coated parts. Has anyone done this with success, and what chemical did you use to remove the coating?

I cleaned up the cases on my Seca 550 using paint stripper. The factory shoots a clear varnish on the cases. Be very careful not to slop on the frame and if you do wash it off right away. Also if there is any painting on the side cases, such as the YICS logo this will come off too. You could tape over it. I bought some metal polish from the local Harley shop and the cases look super. Good luck.

I sand blasted mine then powder coated.

    Works like a charm!

I used paint stripper as well, looked brand new afterwards. As RangerG say's, be careful. If you get it on anything you don't want stripped wipe it off fast.
