Is this a factory or custom tank?

I'm just getting into cafe bikes and I'm looking at modifying an '82 XJ11. I don't like the stock Maxim tank much, but the tank on this modded XS really catches my eye. I'd like to do something like it, but I'm not sure if it's a factory tank or custom. Any thoughts on what it comes from? Thanks.

I like that tank, I wonder the capacity? The stock Maxim tank is not to my liking.

Thanks for weighing in. The more I've been looking into it, my hunch is the tank is from about a 1980 XS1100 Special, give or take a few years. The Special has more of a rake/slant to it from front to back, whereas the non-Special is little taller. The filler neck on the Special is offset to the right, like in the above pictures. I can't find a Special tank with the indentations like this one has, but I'm guessing that was a custom twist that was added.

use www.partzilla.com to look at the tanks or www.yamahapartsnation.com the 1980 tank looked close just did not show the tank detail in the sides

Great links! Thanks. As I look through various 1980 models, each different engine size/class per model has a suffix of G, SG, or LG. What do those indicate?

The bike in your image is a modified XJR400, only released to the Euro crowd. The tank is the stock tank for that bike. Through the range of years that model was produced (1990-2007) the tank recieved subtle tweaks about every other year or so.
If you interested in getting one try looking on the UK or German version of eBay. They go up for sale every now and again but be ready to pay a fair amount for shipping.

There is one currently on Ebay UK for $163.00 USD. It doesn't include the filler cap or petcock.....

I need to correct my previous post information....
The bike in the first post, in fact, IS a XS1100.
The bike in the first post, in fact, DOES HAVE a gas tank from a XJR400.

    I stand corrected.
    There.
