Hey guys, my 82 XJ1100 is far from stock. I've made it more of a blacked out bobber style ride. I'm in need of new rear shocks and would like to know if anyone makes an all black shock/spring combo you could recommend. Trying to stay away from chrome/silver as much as possible.

    Thanks in advance!

I was looking at them. They have great reviews. But I just talked to them and they don’t have them in black for my bike unfortunately.

The XJ11 shocks are easily to rebuild. New seals cost around 30$ and a little shock oil. Paint then when you are done.

If you are going economy try those RFY Chinese shocks from ebay usually from only $45.00 to $90.00 different colors, different lengths etc but they're definitely not Ohlins. Although they are responsible for the sale of a lot of Ohlins decals. I bought a pair out of curiosity, they are amazing for the price, one of these days I'm going to take them apart to see if they can be improved any? I've removed the rubber grommets and installed spherical bearings in each end, that should help.

First, tell me about the rebuild situation. I might be interested in that. They are the originals, so I think they're definitely due for a rebuild or replacement.

Also, what did you think about the RFY Chinese shocks from ebay the way they came? Decent? Are they adjustable? I built the bike to be a solo, but have an additional Honda Rebel rear seat I can bolt on for a 2 up situation now and then. I'm 195# so I don't want them bottoming out with me and/or another rider.

What kind of paint would work well and last on stock shocks? I don't want it flaking off and looking like crap. Painting is NOT my thing....

Thanks for the replies guys. I really respect and appreciate all your advice!

That's a good idea. I've never used it before, but I've heard it holds up very well. And, like you said, it can be peeled off if you decide to change things.

Just so I know, what do I look for when researching shocks that will fit my bike? Is 325 center to center enough to make sure they fit?

The length of the shocks measured from center of top eye to center of bottom eye, typical 320mm (12.59") or 340mm (13.38") measure yours first then compare. The springs (RFY) are 8 mm diameter wire for the heavier bikes. 7 mm wire diameter for lighter bikes XJ-XS are heavy for sure.

OK, I'll do that. Any particular model you recommend 50gary? Do you like the ones with the external reservoir? I'd prefer to stay with the stock shock look, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'll measure mine when I get home and take a look at what they have.

I think the internals of the shock body are the same? The colors, the springs (7mm or 8mm wire dia) and lengths are different. They also offer a bottom clevis instead of an eye but the XJ or XS don't use a clevis. Another thing I do is to replace the rubber grommets with a spherical bearing for better alignment, less friction and more direct action at the mounts.
    Cheers, 50gary
