Another Hoosier hurrah , my 82 Seca 750 slips when engine is hot sometimes, is your not catching at all? Are you using synthetic oil? This can cause it , a switch to 15w40 Shell rotella can help or even 20w50 conventional oil. I have a spare engine I plan on swapping in while I tear into my engine eventually , living by Chicago weather has been brutal this year so until it warms up I just stare at my bike tucked away

Hi Thanks for the reply. The one I'm wanting rebuilt is completely out,I replaced it with another I have and it is like yours. Slips when hot. The one I ride most has 22000 and I figure it will act up soon. Al way's use 20w50 conventional figure it will act up any time!

you can pull the starter and use spray cleaner on the starter clutch or run some seafoam in the motor and ride it for 100 miles before you do an oil change it could be that it is just crudded up.

    20w50 conventional?
Choosing the correct Oil for a wet-clutch Motorcycle

The following link is to the JASO list for all of the oils that currently meet the JASO MA specification. Using oils that are not JASO MA rated can lead to slipping starter clutches, and slipping transmission clutches, on wet clutch motorcycles.

The one I'm wanting rebuilt I done the seafoam, didn't help at all and as it's 37 years old time for some TLC. Thanks for your reply and the oil links.

Has the starter motor been cleaned and the brushes checked for length?

Interesting. I have approx 55-60 xj's. Only ONE ever did that.... and replacing the starter solved it.

Well the story goes like this. When I bought the bike this engine was on the previous owner said it was hard to start" a lot of cranking" Got it home an found plug wires crossed. Ran great for a couple of years, the shop i used for maintenance recommended castrol semi synthetic. eventually would catch at all. tried seafoam an all that no luck, eventually swaped engine for another that will crank all day till warm then slips. the one I ride most is fine an hopefully will stay that way. Just looking for someone who is interested in R&R an engine. Thanks for your reply.
